Omaha parks director job cut (fired me illegally in 07)
Edited on Sat Jul-24-10 09:37 AM by Omaha Steve

Just days before my case was to go to binding federal arbitration, the city settled and I was re-instated. My union paid all the costs. Since they settled, there is no online record to share with the DU.

Omaha's former parks administrator says he lost his job because of city budget cuts.

Steve Scarpello's last day as a city employee was July 9, he said in an interview Friday. He said he was told his job was eliminated to save money during a difficult budget year.

Scarpello, 51, said the city offered him another position — concessions manager for the city's golf courses, hockey rinks and other sports venues — but he turned it down.

“I just thought it was probably better for me to advance my career and look for some different opportunities,” Scarpello said.

If he had accepted the position as concessions manager, Scarpello would have seen his salary drop significantly. That position will pay $56,843 next year, according to Mayor Jim Suttle's 2011 budget proposal.

As parks administrator, Scarpello received an annual salary of $86,641.

Scarpello, who worked for the city for nine years, previously served as parks director. In 2006, then-Mayor Mike Fahey appointed Scarpello to replace Larry Foster, who is now parks director in Council Bluffs.

9. He sounds like a prick who will be out of a job for some time to come
Nobody wants you if you're over 50, not when they can get somebody ten years younger with nearly as good a resume.

Not accepting the other job was pretty stupid.
