This morning - LTTE : My animals are my own business
Published July 20 2010
By: Adam Freeman, Fargo

Does the city of Fargo care if I buy a chest of drawers and then burn it in my fireplace? Does the city care if I plant a flower garden and let it die without water? Why is it any different with an animal? Animals are property, aren’t they? A person is only punished for damaging another person’s property, not their own.

I was recently shocked by an article regarding a serious punishment for a person trying to kill his dog and failing. Did I miss something? Since when does society have jurisdiction over someone else’s private property?

This is America, right? We still observe the right of private property, don’t we? As my property, I’ll do what I wish with my animals, and no one can tell me otherwise, because it’s my right as defined by the U.S. Constitution.

First some sicko writes this then local RW rag prints this. What is the world coming to?
Hopefully the authorities come knockin' at his door to check him out.

12. And his children.
There are people who feel they own their children and can treat them however they want, laws be damned.

9. You raise an interesting point. People routinely kill and process a variety of animals for food
in particular for various rituals to celebrate ethnic holidays.

I've observed several of those efforts be botched and require several attempts to kill the animal.

I understand the position of strict vegetarians who object to killing animals for food but I don't understand the selective opposition to killing animals that in one ethnic group might be treated as pets and in another ethnic group as food and at the same time eating animals that are treated by another ethnic group as sacred.

33. It is a cold day indeed. I agree with your thought here. People routinely inhumanely kill animals
for food and "sport", both of which are legal. In one culture dogs are eaten, in another chicken. In one culture a dog is a pet, in the same country that chickens are killed/eaten some have them as pets.

And I imagined it was Mr Freeman in that wood chipper.

The dumb shit doesn't realize it but he is someone's property too, and they could do this to him if they wanted to.

Look at it again. I did not write it. No other poster thought I wrote it. But you did!
I thought people here would be smart enough to know I didn't write the LTTE without me saying so. I guess not.

Army vet, huh. Officer? How did you survive long enough to become a Vet? With that attitude, you must not have seen any action and stayed on the base for protection.

Next time find someone to explain things to you before you go off half cocked.

You missed this part, that I did write:

"First some sicko writes this then local RW rag prints this. What is the world coming to?
Hopefully the authorities come knockin' at his door to check him out."

32. A century? Try a couple decades.
It used to be perfectly legal for a man to rape his own wife, and laws against it were controversial when they passed.

23. What a piece of trash
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 07:42 PM by Dver1962
To get right to the point, If I witnessed ANYONE mistreating their dog, cat, or any other animal. I would stop them, period. What a dirtball to make such a reprehensible post. It is against the law to abuse an animal for good reason.
They are not a "chest of drawers". Animals feel pain, feel fear, and to to purposely inflict pain just for the sake of a cheap thrill is disgusting. There is no excuse for such behavior and there is no room in society for a person who lacks character to that degree.
What a punk.

For this dolt to even consider sending such a post to the Fargo Forum editor makes me suspect that this individual propably doesn't have a job, or friends, or a healthy personality.

25. It sure does seem
like most of the time, when conservatives are screaming about their rights, it's about their right to abuse and/or exploit or lord it over others---humans and animals. You can start way back with their "right" to keep people as slaves, then their right to keep blacks from living in their communities and in more recent times it's their right to abuse animals and their rights to keep others from having rights, like gays, women, Muslims, immigrants, atheists, etc. Then also, they claim it's their right to abuse their employees and not pay them a decent living, and on and on. What a sick idea of rights they have.

29. Thank you RC
Thank you RC for bringing this sicko LTTE to the attention of others.

I live in Fargo and was horrified to read it in the paper a few days ago. I sent a response in to the Fargo Forum but I am happy to say my letter did not get published because there was an obvious outpouring of response. Many dismayed people wrote in and had letters printed. Some much more well thought out than mine.

One thing I suggested in my LTTE was that if anyone knows this guy they need to check up on the welfare of any unfortunate creatures that may be living under his domain. Just as you suggested... however I do not fault the Forum for printing his LTTE because I want to know if there is a creep like that out there and I want him checked out too! Let him expose himself all he wants. And let us continue to shed light onto these dark corners of our society. Pretty scary stuff!

30. I'm kind of confused.
At the risk of falling to the same fate as this character, I'm curious about how killing dogs, et al is somehow stigmatic. Killing birds, fish, pigs, cows, etc is a perfectly acceptable practice, but turning on any dog (rabid, known killer, you name it) somehow makes the person appear vile. Can someone explain that?

Being from a farming community, I've seen or heard about plenty of farm/family dogs (cats, and horses) being put down (usually with a gun, but there have been other measures). Talking about it the next day in school wouldn't garner any more attention than mentioning the day's lunch menu.

Seriously, why the uproar?

34. Dogs and cats are not going to be used for food.
There is a big difference.

Should people be allowed to torture animals at will too?

35. Who actually reads the subject field?
Enlighten me, what is the difference?

Please don't change the subject, I'm specifically asking: What makes dogs so special? If you can't answer it without appealing to emotion or mystic ideas, than don't answer.
