Feds: Seepage near BP cap coming from another well.. WTF??
WASHINGTON – The federal government's oil spill chief said Tuesday that seepage detected two miles from BP's oil cap is coming from another well. There are two wells within two miles of BP's blowout, one that has been abandoned and another that is not in production.

"It's actually closer to that facility than it is to the Macondo well," the one that blew out, Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said at a Tuesday afternoon briefing. "The combination of that and the fact that it's not uncommon to have seepage around these" abandoned wells is what convinced engineers that BP's well wasn't the source of the seepage, he said.

There around 27,000 abandoned wells in the Gulf, and an Associated Press investigation showed this month that they're not checked for leaks.

5. So instead of one well, now we have 27,000 wells to worry about..
Your screaming is totally appropriate.

4. If it's a different well, why didn't they know it was
leaking weeks ago? Something stinks besides the oil.

7. No one should be surprised
BP probably knew this long before the current disaster hit.

There are 3300 other wells that are probably in bad condition and one step away from a disaster. Is it possible the explosion destablized some of the other wells?

8. I'd have been surprised
if leakage 2 miles away was associated with the BP leak. Its easy for them to test samples to confirm anyway.

10. I figured that's why they originally used the verbage "some distance away"
in their report. They were 'prepping' us to claim it wasn't BP's fault.

11. Isn't it leaking two miles away?
If so, that is some distance from the BP site.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out is either the abandoned well or the one currently not in production. Any person who lives on on the gulf knows leaking wells are a dirty little secret. That is until they're not.

13. 27,000 abandoned wells, and some, if not many are likely "seeping"
"Seeping" being a step down from "leaking", which is a step down from "gushing"

Apparently none are being checked to see what amount of "seeping" is occurring, because doing so would be costly and not profitable. I suppose our government making it a requirement to check these abandoned wells periodically, in order to continue purchasing drilling leases in the GOM, would just be ignored, or many of the government agency employees who are given the responsibility of ensuring compliance would inevitably be bribed, corrupted with gratuitous sex, drugs, and booze, and/or blackmailed by Big Oil anyway.
