Farmers markets and craft fairs.

Having recently visited San Francisco my eyes were opened to the creativity and quality of the goods created by the average citizen. Yes some of the vendors buy and sell cheap crap from China but the quality of the jams, salts, and produce were amazing. The original jewelry wasn't cheap either but there were some nice pieces.

The typical deli shop wasn't part of a huge chain but they served combinations of foods I had never seen before. Strangely enough experiencing San Francisco led me to realize I had not explored my own local neighborhoods to see if we had the type of stores that I got such a kick out of in my travels.

Searching on yelp daily I am beginning to explore my city. This experiment has led me to realize how insulated my experiences were. I now have much more appreciation for the smaller shops with the entrepreneurs I overlooked my entire life. No more McDonalds or Burger King. That was such a waste of time!

Lastly I am excited about supporting these wonderful people. It takes a lot of guts to go off on your own and believe the customers will be there. My hat is off to these folks.

1. My place is stuffed with that sort of thing
We don't see too many home made foods around here since the board of health gets stuffy about things made for sale in home kitchens. People who have upgraded put out some of the best salsas and condiments I've ever had.

Unfortunately, the craft shows get a little smaller each year, artists not being able to justify the gas money to come to them from out of state.

Please support local crafts people. They're always the first to feel the pinch of any Republican disaster.

2. Buying local pays off
The money stays in your community. Local vendors will hold stuff for you, make custom stuff for you. You get conversation. Makers are interesting people. They have good conversation and find time for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. They are excited about what they do and share. Most of all, you are investing in your neighbors, they will employ your neighbors. You get community with your patronage.

3. When it comes down to it...
Service and quality is what the small retailers have that sets them apart from the big guys. We love our local farmers market....
