Grandmother traumatized after traffic stop by Chicago police
Thursday, July 15, 2010
by Wendell Hutson

A West Side grandmother is recovering from bruises to her arm after a Tuesday traffic stop by Chicago police left her and her two, young grandchildren emotionally damaged.

On Thursday she filed a compliant with the Independent Police Review Authority and was scheduled to meet with police brass at Area 5 headquarters, 5555 W. Grand Ave.

“If I am ever stopped again by the Chicago police while driving I will be scared for my safety,” Jimmie Osideko, 50, told the Defender. “There was no reason for these officers to ‘man’ handle me the way they did especially in front of my grandchildren.”

Osideko, who lives in the Austin community, said she was leaving choir rehearsal from Greater St. John Bible Church on the West Side around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when she was forced to stop her car because there was a car double-parked in the street.

“Two plain clothes police officers then pulled up behind me and was blowing their horn and shouting for me to pull over but I couldn’t because I was blocked in,” she recalls. “So when I did not move my car the officers drove up beside me and ordered me out my car and that’s when all hell broke loose.”

According to Osideko, once she stepped out her car, one officer allegedly grabbed her and twisted her right arm so hard she suffered bruises, which were visible two days after the allege incident that took place at the corner of 1200 N. Menard.

Her nightmare got worse once two female police officers arrived, she said.

“One female officer searched me before transferring me into her squad car, and while doing so my breasts were exposed further humiliating me in front of my grandkids and innocent bystanders,” she said. “Just luckily one of my friends were among the bystanders and she looked after my grandkids until I was released from jail around 3:30 a.m.”

The incident has West Side community leaders upset and wanting answers from the police about their plans to address the issue of excessive force.

2. Why would any law abiding citizen expect to be roughed up
by the cops and arrested? How is this woman somehow responsible for all police brutality?

3. According to Republicans you must submit to anything the
police request....even if you have done nothing wrong.

These police have crossed the line.

4. She's not responsible for brutality, but she wasn't a law abiding citizen.
She was ticketed for driving without a license and for not having her grandsons (ages 2 and 4) in proper restraints. And from the article, it seems the police are saying she resisted. Hopefully there was a dash cam, so she can prove her charge.

Don't get me wrong, the police should NEVER use unnecessary force, and if they did in this case, there should be repercussions. But, she was not exactly law-abiding.

5. That doesn't justify her breasts being exposed
That's what alarmed me about this story.

7. It would be nice to have a videotape to see what the story really is
However, just because children are in a car does not prevent a police pullover - nor should it. If she was really manhandled while she was cooperating fully thats a different story.

8. It happens more often than you think.
I don't find this story surprising at all. I've witnessed similar incidences myself several times in my life.

I'm sorry but some police officers get off on the adrenaline and there is no repercussions for inappropriate behavior. Some people go into police work because they like control. Not all are like that but too many are.

I had one who he and his partner use to stalk and harass me all of the time because I had a lot of friends around me so clearly I was selling pot. Not. That ended when they found him in bed smoking pot with a 12-year-old girl.

This pair beat the crap out of a Hispanic man riding in our car because they didn't like him dating a white girl. I had my share of being slammed up against walls or my legs hit with billy clubs for the crime of existing apparently. I've been stopped and surrounded by squad cars and passengers pulled out of car and beaten. Neither I nor any of the people with me at these times have never been charged with a crime and am about as law abiding a citizen as you get. I even had a police given nick name: "The Green Queen" because I was female, drove a green car and was also with lots of friends. That apparently is a crime to them.

I also had some very good friends who worked for the same department who I absolutely adored and would do anything for me.

12. This is all too familiar
Without getting into specifics, let me just say that my mother found herself in almost exactly the same situation and she wasn't as lucky as this woman. Lets just say 5 years later, the injuries she sustained from the police still effect her. My family and I learned a profound lesson about the nature of law enforcement on that day.
