I still want to know about that double plastic bagging for oil blobs

I posted the article several days ago. video showing workers putting 1/4 filled double plastic bags in the truck going to the landfill.

why only 1/4th filled?
why double plastic bagged

who owns the bag company? who owns the landfill?

who is paying the workers to 1/4 fill the bags?

does it even matter I ask myself. does angst over the Gulf destruction even matter. a waste of angst. . .

1. I don't know but it doesn't sound good
i thought the oil is corrosive to some degree...won't it react with the plastic and eat through the bags? ewwwwww.... :scared:

4. Double-bagged to prevent leaks.
1/4 full to keep the weight down and prevent leaks. A full plastic bag is much more likely to leak.

Very simple.

7. but there are very thick plastic bags that won't leak

maybe it was cheaper to buy thin bags and use two

then to buy one thick plastic bag

?

9. That could easily be. Double-bagging is a good way to
combine economy with safety. I guess I don't see the reason for your concern, but I have noted it.

8. The disposal of this gook is another nightmare.
Gaia will reduce our numbers significantly (helped along by the NWO Kissingers and Rushdoonys, ignore the latter at your own peril) then purge herself of the poisons we've created. Just hope this lovely marble doesn't end up like Venus. :tinfoilhat:

11. Gaia, eh? Well, whatever you say.
I believe we're not that close to any sort of extinction event. You're mileage may vary, of course.

20. Yeah, I freely admit my cosmic twinkie tendencies
and fully subscribe to the 2 planets joke. ;-)

May I respectfully disagree with you in that this is not "one" possible extinction event, it is one in a series of MANY. Two words: Food Chain. How 'bout that Garbage Patch, eh? We've been eating that shit for YEARS. Selbe schuld...

How do plastic beaches differ from oiled beaches? Just wondering.

21. We have certainly fouled our own nest, but I'm guessing that
we're still a long, long way from reaching an extinction event.

I'm absolutely certain that I'll be dead of old age long before such a thing comes to pass.

22. Oh dear, my dear MM...
You do realize who you're paraphrasing, don't you?

I don't see it as "a thing" so much as a series of things with chain reactions, ripple and domino effects. Butterfly's wings and all that. ;-) Suffice to say I'm quite content to be an ol' lady.

14. But most delicious.
On the other hand, I have a wild plum tree in my backyard. Not much flesh on those plums, but they're very tasty. Maybe I'll try creating a cross with them and come up with an pluot that will be able to withstand Minnesota winters. Or, maybe not...

So, I try not to eat more than six at a sitting.

15. Expanding a bit on response #2 about heavy and liquid - light sweet
crude oil weighs approx 7 pounds per gallon. A few gallons in a bag will strain even the strongest of bags. Straining the seams will foster leaks. Double bagging will help to prevent this.

And, since people are doing this, there is the potential back injury aspect. Eight or ten gallons of liquidy muck - oil, sand, water - is not only heavy and possibly leaky, it is unwieldy also. It is quite different than toting around 30 or 40 pounds of concrete. All day.

18. I Didn't See the Pictures,
but for removal and disposal, you only fill up a bag if the material is light. Otherwise, the bags break.

I disposed of three loads of broken drywall last weekend and filled the bags up about a quarter of the way. Putting more in would have been a mistake.

19. Here's an example that might make sense to you,
You've been cleaning fish in the sink, and you're done. What's left in the sink is a real mess, so you need to take it out to the garbage can, so it doesn't stink up your house. You have some plastic grocery bags set aside for just such purposes.

Now, it's not going to be pretty if the bag breaks as you head for the back door, so you grab two bags...maybe even three, and put them inside of each other. You then scoop the fish guts and bones up and put 'em in the double or triple bag and secure the whole thing with a twist tie.

When you get out the the garbage can, you have a last look at your package. Sure enough...the nasty stuff has leaked out of the inner bag and you can see it oozing into in the second bag. Now, you're glad you used three bags. Just in case.

That's the principle behind double-bagging nasty crap for disposal.
