what is the GOP equivalent to a yellow dog democrat?
A yellow dog of course being a democrat from a conservative district (ie Chet Edwards). What do they call a republican representing a democratic leaning district (like Tom Latham)? Maybe a red dog republican?

1. A Yellow Dog Democrat is a true party loyalist.
Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 11:40 PM by MilesColtrane
The term comes from the sentiment that, in an election against a Republican, one would vote for an old, yellow dog with a D by it's name.

You're thinking of a Blue Dog Democrat.

The Republican equivalent is usually called a RINO. (Republican In Name Only)

2. Probably Senator Brown from Mass would fit that desctiption, as
would Snowe & Collins. I'm not familiar enough with all the Representatives in all the states to know who they might be in the House.

5. That Is Not What A Yellow Dog Democrat Is, Sir
The term comes from people declaring "I'd vote for yellow dog over a Republican, if they ran him as a Democrat!" The phrase actually comes from the old 'Solid South', and originally was part of the reaction against Reconstruction, after the War of Southern Treason. But it has a nice ring, and has held up over the years to indicate a loyal Party voter.

The Republican equivalent might well be a 'rabid dog' Republican, as in "I'd vote for a rabid dog because he's a good Republican!"

7. No, no, no....
a yellow dog Democrat is a Democrat who'd vote for a yellow dog before they'd EVER vote for a Republican...as in "Even if the Democratic Party ran a yellow dog for office... I'd still vote Democratic" :hi:

10. Back when they existed, "Rockefeller Republicans" or "East-Coast Liberal Republicans"
The Senators from Maine are the last vestigal examples of them, though Brown of MA seems to at least be trying to keep up the appearances.

12. I think you have yellow dog confused with blue dog
Democrat, someone who is slightly left of center, but not much. I suppose today a centrist Republican with common sense now registers as an independent because they don't want to be associated with the looney tunes party the Republicans have become.

14. Being a Southerner, maybe I can help clear this up.
Although I am not a hunter myself, most of my relatives are. In many types of hunts, the success of the hunt lies in the hunting dogs. Southern hunters didn't care for "AKC papers" but looked for certain traits amd became amateur breeders themselves in the quest for the best hunting dog.

It was believed among these amateur breeders that a "yellow" or "yellar" dog was a dog that could not be trained to hunt and would sire offspring that also would be useless for hunting. Remember the movie "Old Yellar"?

So, basically, in old Southern culture "yellow dog" meant the most worthless animal on the planet.

After the Civil War, many Southerners hated Republicans so much that they would vote for the Democratic candidate even if that candidate was a "yellow dog".

For decades that accounted for the "Solid South" - the SouthEast always voted Democrat, although they were Conservative Democrats. When LBJ signed the civil Rights bill, he famously said "well, we just lost the South". And he was right.

There are no more "yellow dog Democrats."
