The 22 statistics that you are about to read prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the middle class is being systematically wiped out of existence in America.

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer at a staggering rate. Once upon a time, the United States had the largest and most prosperous middle class in the history of the world, but now that is changing at a blinding pace.

See proof of the Middle Class extermination -->

So why are we witnessing such fundamental changes? Well, the globalism and "free trade" that our politicians and business leaders insisted would be so good for us have had some rather nasty side effects. It turns out that they didn't tell us that the "global economy" would mean that middle class American workers would eventually have to directly compete for jobs with people on the other side of the world where there is no minimum wage and very few regulations. The big global corporations have greatly benefited by exploiting third world labor pools over the last several decades, but middle class American workers have increasingly found things to be very tough.

2. Hoping my rec helps keep this on the greatest.
It was at six when I started reading, and now I am the sixth vote (After my rec)

Some here do not like the truth?

Or some here feel they are agreeing with the article by unrec'cing? (As in. "I hate being poor, so I cannot approve an article that shows how it is happening" ??)

3. Reallthy, though, what does "middle class" mean?
Everyone seems to think they're middle class. You're "middle class" if you shop at Target and you're "middle class" if you shop at Nieman Marcus (on occasion). People have an emotional attachment to the term, because it places a social buffer between themselves and the poor people. What is "middle class" in relation to the poverty line, etc.? How much can you make until you are no longer "middle class?"

6. Middle class to me is: You've broken your ankle and will not be able to work for..
...6 weeks....doctor bills are due along with the mortgage, cable, power, water and other assorted bills and your biggest worry is
what's on TV tonight. :)

10. +1. As it once was
I sprained and fractured my ankle and dislocated the opposite knee last year. I'll never be able to jog again because I couldn't afford proper treatment, or wheelchair rental. :-(

20. Aw Geez....I'm sorry to hear that. It's so sad when someone has to endure...
...a life-long hassel just because our insurence "plans" (Hah!) in this country are so barbaric...and costly.

9. Middle Class: A definition
The class or social stratum lying above the working class and below the upper class.
...
By 1843...the middle class were shopkeep rs and professional men, distinguished from the working class by occupation and education. They are distinguished from the upper class by seriousness, moral purpose, and the need of earning a living.

In modern times, the middle class is determined by consumption habits. Most Americans consider themselves middle class.

From the Oxford Concise Dictionary of Politics.

12. "and the government keeps passing more rules and regulations seemingly on a monthly basis that . . .
. . . that makes it even more difficult to conduct business in the United States."

Really? The middle class is being destroyed because there's too much regulation on corporations? REALLY?

I.m.h.o., we need more, not less, at least of certain kinds; the trick is that it's needed in other countries, too.

17. There's an incorrect statistic in there.
They state that there a 6 job seekers per job on average.

A local study was done here & found there were actually 42 job seekers per job. That's probably more like how it is nationwide too.

19. The very first stat doesn't really support the title
Using the data provided:

Calculate the % of each cohort at each date:

________Top 1%______Next 9%___Next 10%__Next 20%__Mid 20%___Bot 40%
1962____94.416%____ 4.830%____0.537%____0.173%____0.043%____0.011%
1983____92.920%____ 5.998%____0.716%____0.273%____0.093%____0.022%
1989____87.557%____ 9.624%____1.884%____0.662%____0.273%____0.048%
1998____86.098%____ 9.938%____2.711%____0.938%____0.314%____0.056%
2001____83.649%____12.009%____3.092%____0.968%____0.281%____0.042%

Yeah, in 2001, 83.6% of stocks were held by the wealthiest 1%, but so what? That number has been steadily declining. All other cohorts have seen substantial increases since 1962.
Only in the last data point (1998-2001) have the Middle 20% and the Bottom 40% declined, returning to roughly 1989 levels.

Thats hardly a proof that "The Middle Class Is Being Systematically Wiped Out Of Existence."

21. oh please
can we stop the hyper over the top crap?

The middle class isn't being targeted or systematically destroyed.

7 years ago when myself and my wife moved in together we made under 40k between us...this year we will make somewhere between 70 and 80.

Times are tough right now but it's not some worldwide conspiracy
