Poll question: Is BP ounce for ounce, more evil, more incompetent, more greedy, etc than other oil companies?
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 11:04 AM by hedgehog
The focus these many fine weeks has been on BP. But are other oil companies just as bad? Is it possible that no matter how careful and dedicated the people involved, we will inevitably see more death, damage and disaster as we try to get every last drop of oil?

1. They're all the same
I cannot for the life of me figure out why a bunch of anti-corporatists can't figure that out.

2. Yes, other oil companies are just as bad and in many cases worse.
I don't really know why anyone would think otherwise, honestly. (Read about what Royal Dutch Shell did in Africa sometime. See here, for a start.)

3. Why does BP receive Billions in Subsidies?
Does BP pay any income tax?

4. Shell + Nigeria = ethnic cleansing and enviromental anhiliation.
All oil companies are cut from the same cloth.

5. There should be a corollary to NIMBY - Not In My Back Yard!
It's is only human nature, but we worry like crazy over the leak in the Gulf and ignore what's been going on forever in Africa and South America.

6. BP is worse than the others. That's a well known fact.
Why people want to carry water for BP is a mystery. Contrarians, I suppose.

9. You can repeat your BP talking points all you want.
Doesn't change things.

I suggest you spend some time learning why BP is so much worse than the others, and let those who are knowledgeable address the issue until then. Your devotion to BP is ridiculous, even if you sold the BP stock you bought ten days into this disaster, shouting "EUREKA" to all here who would listen. As you admitted then, it was the first oil stock you'd ever bought. Stick to what you know.

12. So you ignore the fact that Shell has done a magnitude more damage in Nigeria.

A "spill" that has been going on for decades affecting millions yet is dismissed as mere "talking point". Then again it is just a bunch of poor Africans who live far away, it isn't like they are real people like the Gulf residents are.

If this Gulf accident had happened in Nigeria, neither the government nor the company would have paid much attention," said the writer Ben Ikari, a member of the Ogoni people. "This kind of spill happens all the time in the delta."

"The oil companies just ignore it. The lawmakers do not care and people must live with pollution daily. The situation is now worse than it was 30 years ago. Nothing is changing. When I see the efforts that are being made in the US I feel a great sense of sadness at the double standards. What they do in the US or in Europe is very different."

17. I can see that you have nothing.
Take some time to educate yourself, and learn why BP is the worst oil company in the world.

10. Relative evil has nothing to do with it. Is the drunk driver that runs over three school children
more evil than the drunk driver that makes it home in one piece without running anyone over?

Just because other drunk drivers are culpable of breaking the law or putting the public at risk doesn't mean that nothing should be done against the one that kills the school children, due to his/her neglect and carelessness.

Thanks for the thread, hedgehog.
