Anyone else here seeing their "ignore" list growing?
I was over at a thread on unemployment benefits running out, and could not believe what I was seeing (reading).
I realize a lot of people have been talking about the change in attitude on DU but wow. I read someone's post saying they had over 900+ folks on ignore.

What's the record?

I could have written anything in the subject line but you won't see it if everyone's on ignore. :)

78. I guess I do have an ignore button in real life
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 09:31 AM by DeschutesRiver
While I have never avoided, culled or ignored anyone for disagreements (even fierce, heated ones)over ideas, I have done so frequently for self-absorbed people who thrive on taking offensive where none is intended, who go out of their way to believe that everything is all about them, and thus whose minds are either dysfunctional or closed by choice. In real life, no, I don't deal with people who have such behavioral issues.

But I've never put anyone on ignore online, on any board anywhere, in my life, until yesterday. I used to answer the ignore question by saying that ignore was not necessary unless one needed such a crutch; that if you didn't like an idea, either debate it or just read it and move on, but here is what I've learned. As to ideas, same applies, but as to behavioral issues, I have a new policy. If I see nothing but repeated personal attacks, incivility or the like (to the point where there has been zero debate of the issue), then I am giving this "ignore" thing a try. So far, it is a pretty small list. I am going to keep being careful to clear up any misunderstandings that arise, or give the benefit of the doubt, because sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment and I don't want to squelch the chance to learn another point of view just because of "heat". But deliberate misunderstanding and personal attacks, without any debate about an issue or idea? Pointless. I suspect that my former tolerance for such behavior actually enables it in some cases.

I am amazed that it would be at DU that I first used an ignore feature. Maybe I have different standards for democrats - while I am used to see narcissitic people who refuse to or can't critically think elsewhere, I can't believe how the same thing is taking over here. It isn't why I come here, it isn't who I want to be, and it isn't the best other posters can be either, but I have no intention of letting it get in my way here. I have seen this kind of thing on other threads, increasingly. It is too easy to slip into the brawl, without thinking, when this sort of thing happens on a thread.

P.S. I also had no idea there was a hidden thread feature, and I am going to use it for threads about people abusing animals - probably the only thing that has ever upset me on this board. I never pull up those threads because of my reaction to them, and it even upsets me to see the subject line.

I think one of the people I have on ignore starts a daily thread about kittens and puppies, for example.

If that person contributes to a thread, I see their contribution. I just don't have to go "What the fuck is that?" for every Care Bears and Holly Hobby thread he or she starts.

I'm filtering the frivolous.

I disagree. Imagine the Physic Professor who has studies the field all of his adult life discussing basic mathematics with a young student. The student is incorrect, refuses to admit as such, and then simply continues to use the same logical fallacies time after time.

The Professor soon walks away while the young student is still engaging in his righteous monologue. I perceive the Professor ignoring him less as being thin-skinned, and more as simply being concerned with not wasting his own time.

But then again, I seem to lack the absolutism of the intentions of others that you imply to posses in this context...

71. Yes, that's it. Despite what some here seem to think, there are abusive people on this board.
But since mods here give everyone the benefit of the doubt, it takes time and effort to get their accounts banned; in the meantime, many good, thoughtful members are abused.

I don't take abuse from anyone, and I know when someone is just trolling for a fight, and I just hit the little red x and it's gone.

Certainly, if others want to fight or squabble with these people, go right ahead. I'm just not going to waste my time. Kind of seems disrespectful to Skinner and the mods to engage like that, but hey, whatever.

24. I had about 48 people on at one point - some have since been banned; others, I've taken off
just because I felt that the decision was made in haste.

But others I've left on and have no intention of taking off.

I'm going to be honest - I don't come here to DU to be exposed to a wide range of views; I come here to talk with friends, see how people are working to advance a progressive, liberal agenda, and to encourage others to do likewise.

I do not enjoy reading what people on Free Republic are saying, I do not enjoy being flamed or insulted here (which is not the same as reading people disagree with my arguments or opinions; that is 100% fine). I do not care what Matt Drudge is putting on his little website.

I don't have anyone on ignore. I don't want to be like a right winger who puts his fingers in his ears and mutters 'la la la la la' to drown out anything they aren't conditioned to believe. I like to read a wide variety of opinions. But I guess someone will put me on ignore for even saying that. I don't want to live in a cocoon where I hear only things I agree with. What's the point of that and what can you learn from just being part of a choir with everyone singing the same tune?

You kind of get to know who you may or may not agree with by reading a few of their responses, but like some of the others said, you may sometimes agree with something and that poster may have stated it eloquently. I would not want to miss the information because they are on ignore so I don't do it. To each their own however. 58. No one. never have used the ignore function.
If you can't simply ignore on an informal level, those who make stupid posts here, then you need to rethink your ability to be on a board that intends to encourage lively debate.

Plus, I've had the experience of having an exchange that was practically a flame war with someone in one area, and within 48 hours that person coming to my defense over something else in another area. Clearly that person didn't put me on ignore.

There are areas on DU that I simply don't go to, or don't post, because I am so completely in disagreement with most of the discussions in those areas. It's up to me to behave like an adult.

59. Well, that was interesting!
I'm not thin-skinned, just looking to ignore the ignorant (or time-wasters).
Yep, I know I can skip their posts, but no need to get worked up over stuff I can just ignore.

None of you folks are on my list! I enjoy your posts, even when they are of differing opinion. I think I have maybe 15 folks on my list, but there seems to be more folks here lately that are disruptive and their threads are not INstructive. Or they are just plain rude.

I know it's the Internet and everyone can 'play'. Just need to be my own filter and editor.

Thanks for all of your replies.

67. Nope.
The only people on my "ignore" list are just a few people who post vanity videos in the PV forum.

Otherwise, I can ignore people perfectly fine on my own, no need to have a machine do it for me. Besides, even people I knock heads with are right sometimes.

68. I only have a few left on mine.
Only reason they're on it is to make the Lounge a tolerable place.

69. My Ignore List has climbed in the past month.

You'd be surprised how much it cleans up the board if you eliminate a number of the heavy thread starters. You know the ones. No thought crosses their mind without their starting a thread over it. No personal event or observation is too insignificant not to justify its own thread. No matter how many threads there are on a topic, they have to start one of their own.

Haven't missed them.

Love that function, "hide thread."
