A WSJ story to bring a tear to your eye - the troubles of billionaires and their estates
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 11:53 PM by murdoch
Eugene Sukup has a $15 million estate. Thanks to BUSH, if he dies this year, his estate goes to his heirs tax-free. If he dies next year, his estate will be taxed because of OBAMA. OBAMA has created an incentive for him to die this year.

I completely broke down sobbing when I read this quote from the article:

"You don't know whether to commit suicide or keep on living and working." - Eugene Sukup

Don't you people have a heart? Take a look at Sukup standing in front of his parent's grave.

Think of what turmoil you are putting this millionaire through. His inheritance stands to be taxed.

Have a heart people. Stop being so cruel. Reach out and think about the most vulnerable, those who need to be taken care of - the millionaires and billionaires currently writing their estate plans.

37. there was a Benny Hill skit
where Benny played this rich businessman who gives a two or three minute spiel where he keeps repeating the advice "eliminate the middle man" as the key to success. Then he clutches his chest and says "I am having a heart attack, call an ambulance" The son leaves and comes back ten seconds later and Benny says "Did you call an ambulance." and the son says "No, I eliminated the middle man, I called the coroner." and Benny says "That's my boy!!" before he keels over.

12. In all seriousness the repubs have been planning this since Nixon.
It's what the Bush tax cuts were all about. Money was put into tax free accounts 30 years ago and is now coming do in 2010 and being passed on. Financial planning at its best.

13. "This kind of a tax regime is a real disincentive to work, save and generally be productive."
I assume it goes like this:

Martha: I was expecting to inherit $15 million from grandpa's estate, but he didn't die in time and I only got $8 million.

Sue: That's terrible! Whatever will you do?

Martha: Nothing, I suppose. I mean, what's the point? I'll just sit on my ass and eat Doritos all day.

Sue: I guess you're right. The estate tax is such a disincentive to work and be productive.

Martha: I know! And forget saving it. Do you know that at 0.21% my bank offers, it will only earn $16,800 a year? I told them "No thank you!" I mean, who wants that? I'm better off spending all my money as fast as I can on something completely worthless.

Sue: I think my husband, Mike, can get you some mortgage backed derivatives it it will help? He might still have some Enron stock laying around, too.

Martha: Oh, it sure would! Gosh, when the hard times come, a gal really learns who her true friends are! Thanks, Sue!

And...scene!

Edited on Wed Jul-14-10 02:14 PM by county worker
because they are the ones who are productive and give the rest of us a meaning to live. And someday you can be wealthy too and get your wealth tax free.

Of course that is the freeper point of view.

My opinion is that we need to tax them to reduce the deficit.

31. That guy started that company from nothing and built it up, he isn't some trustafarian douche.
Yeah he should pay taxes, and a fair bit of them, but painting him as some sort of pathetic monster is pretty unreasonable.

His business also employs 350 people which is no small thing.

43. I'm not sure who to feel more sorry for,
Sukup or the poor, overworked people in Congress. From the article:

"Many Washington insiders are betting Congress won't act this year because of an overflowing to-do list, the fall election and fewer than 40 working days left in 2010. At least one near-deal has failed the Senate this year."

Fewer than 40 working days left in 2010? Damn, must be rough to have such a tough schedule.
