Teens using digital tones to get high
OKLAHOMA CITY — Teens in Oklahoma and other states are experimenting with what they say is a new way to get high: listening to online music and tones that they say can cause a drug-like state of euphoria.

The youths plug into what they call 'i-dosers' by putting on headphones and downloading music and tones that create a supposed drug-like euphoria, according to some school officials.

The technology is designed to combine a tone in each ear to create a binaural beat designed to alter brainwaves.

In March, three students at Mustang High School in Mustang, Okla., were sent to the principal's office when they appeared to be high on drugs or alcohol, Mustang School District Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot said. She said the kids explained that they had tried something called i-dosers.

I thought this was bs, but there seems to be an abundance of vids on youtube about this, not to mention tons of google results. Interesting. Maybe I need to get an ipod...

The idea that kids are trying to get high? Or the part where adults have another Moral Panic when the word "drugs" is mentioned?

4. I've heard of this - it isn't new
Certain people are affected by it. I remember a program called "Cool Wave" that had an effect that could be applied to music. It apparently had a soothing or druglike effect.

I forget what it's called, but it never affected me.

The basic concept of a certain type of sound affecting brainwaves has been known for over 150 years, though. Idoser in particular is pretty powerful bullshit, though, almost as powerful as some of the fear-laden claims being made in that article.

14. I have been using and prescribing light-and-sound devices,
sone with binaural beat auditory stim, for years. It's nice, it's relaxing, it demonstrably affects brainwave patterns, and you can use it for at least temporary relief from a variety of problems including high anxiety, ADD, etc. You use different programs, which drive the brain at different frequencies, for different purposes. Aside from a very small possibility of inducing seizures, I know of no harm from these things. They are certainly not addictive, and do not particularly alter the brain chemistry as psychoactive drugs do. People who are freaking over this stuff are idiots.

61. Binaural beats are not bunk
It's how some animals, including humans, are able to localize sound.

It got picked up by the transcendentalism, new-age crap movement and the legitimate science behind a natural phenomenon got exploited into "getting high" and "out-of-body experience" junk. Since no one can patent the phenomenon, it's cheap material for junk peddlers like Reiki.

There's been a lot of legitimate and reputable work done with it, too, however.

This is a scam, nothing more. Try it for yourself. I invite anybody who says otherwise to try it for yourself. I'm sure they're on YouTube somewhere.

This reminds me of the idiot sheriff in the 90's who sent out warnings about kids getting high on their own feces and urine--a substance called Jenkem.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenkem

Sounds like it's tough to be a teenager in Oklahoma, what with idiot administrators worried about tone highs and US Senators worried about "rampant lesbianism" in Oklahoma's high school bathrooms. Give 'em hell, kids, make them jump at every shadow they see. How about starting a rumor about making Jenkem in the high school bathrooms in a blatant and rampantly-lesbian way? That ought to keep them busy for awhile.

56. My sister has been meditating to binaural beats for years.
She even makes her own CDs. There's a bunch of free applications you can download to create them.

I've listened to her CDs and the effect is very similar to the gong that my teacher plays in my yoga classes. It definitely spaces you out a bit and puts you into a bit of a trance. Very calming, though. I don't see anything wrong with it. I'd much rather my kids listen to binaural beats than take ecstasy.

65. LMAo.. I don't see why people are surprised or denying this..
and I don't see what the big fucking deal is. Music has always been mood altering. It's the way it is. Composers and song writers use certain keys to evoke certain feelings. Here let's let Nigel explain:

Nigel Tufnel: It's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy I'm working on in D minor which is the saddest of all keys, I find. People weep instantly when they hear it, and I don't know why.

These scare stories are probably part of a plot by the makers of Prozac because they are afraid that people will find out that they don't always need pills to chill out.... :)

Shit, with all the brain cells I lost to that, my IQ would probably be 150 ;)

77. "I-Doser?" You mean another one of those things that use the placebo effect
to make people think that they're getting high? I'm not buying this one. Snake oil anyone?

85. dismiss the placebo effect as "snake oil" at your own risk
I've been reading Norman Cousins lately and trying to encourage everyone to do the same. "Anatomy of an Illness" is astonishing.

83. I use a binaural recording with edible cannabis for chakra meditation
and if I use pranayama breathing at the same time I can manage some pretty impressive results: an orgasmic shower of tingly cascading purple sparks shooting from my crown chakra, "astral" travel, intensely vivid and detailed waking dreams, etc.

So, yeah. It works well. Good for these kids; maybe this will serve to move some of them into meta-programming.

90. So, for experimentation purposes, I tried it
looked up binaural on youtube and put on some headphones, listened to one. I got really sleepy. I think one has to concentrate on the background wavy-sounding noise.
