The stupidity of the American public
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 11:50 AM by Cyrano
From 1968 to 2008, the Republicans held the White House for 28 years, while the Democrats held it for only 12. Exactly how stupid do voters have to be to consistently vote against their own well being?

And by voting against their own well being, I’m saying that the Republican Party doesn’t give a damn whether most Americans have jobs, can support their families, can survive difficult times, or even whether they live or die. Republican politician’s concerns don’t go beyond Wall Street, big business, their own personal wealth and getting reelected.

The Democrats are far from perfect, (and blue dog Democrats are nothing but Republicans in Democrat’s clothing). But, for the most part, the Democratic Party has a far more impressive history of caring about us “peasants.”

It seems that you really can fool most of the people most of the time. All you have to do is play to their ignorance and bigotries. But how often do you have to get hit over the head with a two by four before you grasp that you’re being whacked by someone who doesn’t give a damn about your existence?

Having said all this, and having stuck by President Obama for a year and a half now, I’m beginning to wonder what’s going on in his mind. He’s brilliant, he’s knowledgeable of history, and I have believed that he really cares about our well being. But I’m beginning to wonder if I may be as stupid as I consider so many Americans to be.

And, yes, I know about Obama’s accomplishments and the opposition he’s facing. Nonetheless, I’m wondering why so many Bush leftovers are still in his administration.

I’m wondering if he cares more about his own reelection than holding onto as many congressional seats as possible.

I’m wondering how many of us he’s willing to throw under the bus and for what reasons.

I’m wondering how many Democrats are going to show up at the polls this year and two years from now.

I’m wondering if Obama fully grasps the implications of how he’s currently being viewed by many in the Democratic base.

And I’m fearful that if the Republicans regain the White House and the congress, their past crimes will seem minor compared to what they’ll do to us next.

So, all of my wondering aside, I am going to vote for Democrats this year and in 2012. I’m going to hope that Obama manages to add some wisdom to his smarts. And I’m going to hope that the majority of the American public is not as stupid as I believe them to be.

1. their past crimes will seem minor compared to what they’ll do to us next.
Is it a crime if no one wants to prosecute? Torture is in America's future and because no one will prosecute for it, it is no longer either a crime nor immoral.

2. I don't think you're
stupid. I think you're having feelings of betrayal. I had mine after the '06 elections and Impeachment proceedings didn't take place.

The system is rotten. The corporations and TPTB call the tune. Our nation is some weird form of fascism with a large and powerful propaganda machine.

I wish I lived in France, but I don't.

I look at most Americans as willfully ignorant, not stupid. Because you can tell them all the facts and they will still keep their heads up their asses.

3. The president is supposed to represent all citizens
...not just the ones in the party that elected him. When was the last republican president who did this?

10. +1
At least, he went through motions - like increasing min wage and progressive tax policies...

Obama doesn't even bother to pretend that gives a shit about working people.

5. I don't think the majority are, but it seems that
this phenomena has come into being along with changes in how we count our votes at election time. It's time to go back to the paper ballot, hand counted twice by representatives from each party to make sure the count is accurate.

7. Stealing an election means that it has to be close enough to be stolen
The Supreme Court never could have appointed Bush if it had not been as close as it was. And it's this closeness that leads to my opinion regarding the stupidity of far too many Americans.

12. It was only close in Florida because
of all the subterfuge and criminality perpetrated by the GOP. There is evidence that Gore would have crushed Bush in Florida otherwise. Same with Ohio in 2004. They can make the election look close enough to steal.

13. It only appeared to be close
Because Gore won by a large margin of the popular vote. I know. Facts are fickle.

11. Paper ballots! Yes!
Americans would at least look smarter if we insisted on paper ballots.

8. "Personal Responsibility"
An euphemism used by reich-wingers to justify their ultimate goal of privatizing everything, other than our military and our three branches of government. They also want to quickly end all entitlements, which would eventually cause tens of millions more Americans to become homeless and starving, since charities could not possibly be able to help shelter, clothe, and feed all of them.

Of course most reich-wingers do not realize what the result would be if they successfully eliminated all forms of governmental support. Desperation would drive those affected (that are healthy enough), to completely rely upon committing crimes to survive, most would eventually be caught, convicted, and imprisoned, and soon there would not be enough jails or prisons to put all of them into, as well as the increasing billions of dollars their imprisonment would cost, which would be passed onto "hard-working, honest, god-fearing, and taxpaying" reich-wingers.

They would need to find a quick "solution" to eliminate any possibility of being "unfairly" taxed to pay for those unwashed tens of millions of convicted and sentenced American "criminals" who would need food, shelter, medical/dental treatment, and clothing.

9. Regarding your last paragraph, it isn't difficult to imagine what kind of
quick "solution" would be available. However, it could be quite final.

14. He needs to be more "trial lawyer" and less "law professor"!
I don't care why it needs to get done, damn it, just do it!
