I've had a few requests for my recipe for cannabis ointment, so I thought I would just re-post the email I sent to a DU member earlier so more people have access.
Remember, if you do not live in a medical state, this can get you sent to jail!
I use coconut oil, which is not only really healthy but a great extractor for cannabis. I usually measure anywhere between a half and full gram on cannabis, depending upon the potency, to every ounce of oil. This seems to work best. You do not need high grade marijuana at all: mid-grade or bud trim works perfectly well.
Slow extraction on low heat is best: NEVER let cannabis boil! I use huge slow cookers: they are inexpensive and the lowest setting always works well. Unlike when making oil for cooking I don't add water. At about hour six I add a few ounces of locally sourced beeswax for consistency, texture and smell (yum!). About an hour before I pull it from the heat I add alcohol-based tinctures of arnica montana, calendula officinianlis, white willow bark, St Johns Wort and Lavender for the soothing scent. If you keep it on the cooker for a few minutes most of the alcohol will be burned away.
Remove from the burner and let it cool a bit (trust me on this, hot beeswax sucks) before you run it through some cheesecloth. Make sure you give the leavings a really good squeeze by hand, between two small plates or using a coffee press. You want to get all that good dark green ooze!
I usually decant mine into glass jars with swinging lock lids. You can keep it in the fridge and let it warm to room temperature for use or just leave it out. It wont go "bad" but refrigeration preserves potency.
This ointment works incredibly well. The arnica, calendula, willow and wort all work to reduce inflammation and swelling while the cannabis seems to relieve pain quite effectively by activating the CB receptor in the muscles. The lavender and beeswax smell great together. I've been using it myself as well as giving it to friends with serious arthritis and joint issues; I now have a long waiting list of folks for each batch I produce.
I hope you try the ointment. It is easy and natural and works very well.
Please don't be afraid to let me know if you have any questions about the process. I am happy to help in any way I can!
