Re: Long term unemployment and what to do about it
I have a world of sympathy for folks that were downsized or outsourced out of a job. I realize that many fields, where older workers have been working their whole lives are extremely difficult to find a job in and don't want to hire older workers. I question, however if people can just be on unemployment indefinitely. What do you all think?

I'm also curious about why some people have been on unemployment for 99 weeks and some people's benefits have run out in much shorter time periods.

3. Re 99 weeks
the 99 weeks of unemployment insurance payments is the result of a series of "tiers" that the government passed. Basic unemmployment is 26 weeks, then Tier 1 another 20 weeks, Tier 2 added more (another 20 or so) and Tier 3 again added more (another 20 weeks or so) - not sure of the exact number of weeks each Tier allowed. Tiers 1 - 3 are the extensions that have expired; the original 26 weeks remains in force. Once an individual reached the end of Basic or the Tier they were on, they had to re-appply in order to to become eligible for for the next tier.
