Majority of Americans Now Against Off-Shore Drilling
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 04:49 PM by Joanne98

According to a just released poll by Rasmussen published at Enviroknow, it appears that Republican voters have now moved left, tipping the nation’s majority against off-shore oil drilling. Pre-disaster, only 31% of Republicans were concerned or somewhat concerned, so along with the 70% of Democrats who were concerned it was a wash. But now that 50% of Republicans say that they are very or somewhat concerned, the nation’s tipping point is reached. (Democrats concern has grown to 84%.)

As of two months into this disaster, more than half of all Americans are now against drilling for off-shore oil.

But this month, Republican Senators plan to (once more) filibuster legislation to end our dependence on dirty energy.

What is more, of this Republican group of likely voters surveyed, almost all of them said they were following the ‘offshore drilling incident’ closely – 93%. This means it really has their attention, because if they didn’t care, they wouldn’t be following it closely. They do see what is happening. If they are following it, then they are beginning to understand the implications of fossil energy dependence.

This is in marked contrast to the Republican response to science and climate change, where the response to an even more catastrophic danger has been to put their fingers in their ears and see nothing, there is no global warming, it’s all a hoax, Al Gore, scientists are just in it for the money or whatever.

1. It doesn't matter
what the "majority" thinks in this corporate kleptocracy. The "majority" is no more in command here than it is in China.

2. Well, when the judges that are ruling on moratoriums are tied so heavily to the oil industry
public opinion means nothing.
And really, most of the people for offshore drilling reside right on the Gulf Coast and nothing will change if they put certain jobs ahead of avoiding disaster to our oceans.

4. The question was not "are you opposed to offshore drilling",
it was "are you concerned that offshore drilling will cause environmental problems". They may not be so concerned as to oppose it outright. Go figure. But don't you worry about anyone who answers "not sure"? Almost worse than the "not concerned at all". Not concerned at all? Who are these people?

9. People that don't live on the coast.
I personally don't think mountaintop removal is a problem at all. It's irrelevant that the nearest mountain is several hundred miles away. (Actually I'm using that to make a point. I'm against MTR too.)

They're people that aren't close to the problem, and they have no empathy, so they don't care. There are even some on this board.

10. Empathy is everything. How many times I tell people to look the work up
in the dictionary! But not living on the coast is not an excuse by me. And yes, mountain top removal is a sin against all that is right---blew me away when I was driving through WV.

6. It won't matter.
A majority of Americans supported single-payer, and it wasn't even on the table.

7. The list of majority preferences ignored by our corportist Congress, Courts, and Exec
in the past 10 years alone is outrageously long. I really had hope some of that would change beginning in 2009, but alas.
