around it. I hope the cap goes a well as this went.

I hope the cap goes well too and the oil is stopped. As much as I like watching the ROVs in action, I'll be glad to see that come to an end.

8. Even though I know the oil is still gushing out the top, for some rason
that seal put me at ease for the first time since this all started. An end to the oil in the water with feel like a brand new day. It will make the relief well seem less desperate, as well.

10. If the relief wells don't seal it, this is going to have to be the permanent setup. It makes me
wonder... if BP is successfully producing this gusher in this configuration, will they be a little reticent to kill the thing?

24. Why don't we wait until BP is actually able to successfully
produce anything in this configuration. All they did so far is to attach a part (spool) and not an actual cap. So I have no freaking clue as to what some of you appear to be so happy about.

25. Something actually went right.
I am guarded in my optimism, for sure. And I juat read that this new collection system will take at least a few days to complete and even then the ships needed to contain the 60,000 barrels won't be there for two to three weeks. So, if everything goes perfectly (HUGE if) there won't be full containment for a few more weeks.

26. The only thing that was done is to attach the part to which the
cap still has to be attached. The part in itself does not collect any oil. The oil now flows completely unrestricted so I am not sure there is anything to be happy about at this particular time. At all.

32. I doubt it.
Oil if free. Extracting oil is what generates cost.

Having to constantly monitor a cap, worry about another future leak, risk of collapse to well shaft or BOP, combined with requirement to shut off containment durring hurricaine means this will NEVER under any possible scenario be cheaper than simply sealing the well and drilling a new functional well.

I am not saying BP will do the "right thing" I am saying BP will do the most economical thing which is seal this as quickly as possible and drill new wells. Have you seen a shot of the Gulf. Usually a well has a single rig/platform and maybe 2-3 support ships. This "project" has 5 platforms, and 2 dozen support ships. For what some marginal value water contaminated oil.

For the amount of resources spent on reducing the oil flow BP could have 4-5 functional oil wells around the world. If you were BP which would you rather have

a) The PR nightmare Deep Water Horizon
or
b) 5 new wells globally generating about 28 million dollar a day in oil revenue.

30. I agree with that tekisui.
It was a big relief to see it go on as planned, the beginning of the end. Progress comes in small steps to get to the final solution. It was a moment in the history of this gusher.

am a little behind on what's happened to this point. I understand they have the "spool" in place but isn't oil still coming out of the top of it?

I hope someone is recording all this. I missed them placing the spool =( ...

9. Yes, the oil is flowing out of the spool.
The removal of the flange, by the bolts and addition of the spool was done with relatively little trouble. The new cap will come next, with the valves that can be closed gradually to avoid putting too much pressure on the blowout preventer, it is much like a second blowout preveneter.

It's quite poignant to me because it shows what an unbelievably skilled and competent job these teams can do when they're not being pressured to cut corners etc.

I'm always glad I don't have to work on Mondays. ;-)

The new cap and it's giant stuff on top is in the water under the sea. They are moving right along with getting this up and running, and hopefully it goes according to the plans to contain most all of the oil spilling after the cap is attached.

to the scene. I can see no reason why this thing won't work. Keepin' fingers crossed they put that thing on and suddenly no more oil is spewing into the open water. Which also means they can stop using dispersant.

that they will begin testing this tomorrow and if it works it will capture all the oil. I kept hearing reports of "all the oil" and my mind twisted it into "stopping" not "capturing" so I figured they were confused. Turns out I was the one who was confused. I had no idea it would ideally capture it ALL, I thought just a higher percentage than the initial one. So this is REALLY a BFD! :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

63. That's the perforated pipe.

It looks like they just removed it and it's only the cap on the well now. The oil will continue to flow until the valve is closed. They have to test the integrity of the well first.

66. Is it 'leaking' as in 'oops'? or one that they will be closing? And thanks for
ID-ing it, by the way.
