Theme for the New Postmodern Economy or Whatever It is:
Ya gotta jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton,
Jump down, turn around, pick a bale a day!
O lordy, pick a bale of cotton!
O lordy, pick a bale a day!

And show some Enthusiasm!!

Or else they'll find some cotton-pickin' people
Who can jumpdown, turn around, pick two bales a day.

For the same pay.

(Thanks to Leadbelly for the theme)

1. We used to sing that in class in first grade.
And we'd act it out while singing it. Had no idea what it was about when I was that little. Then when I saw the movie "The Jerk," Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee were singing it at the beginning of the movie and I said, "Whoa!" I often wonder why the teacher chose that song for us, though a friend told me that they also used to sing it when he was little.

2. I learned it from a recording, an LP in a set called The Folk Box
back in the early 60's. It always meant a sort of frantic effort to me! (I was in college at the time).
