2. What are you doing on the computer when you see that popup?
There's the key to the answer.

10. Do you ever visit the Drudge Report?
That site is forever plopping annoying things like this on computers. What has happened, either from there or from some other site, is that a persistent pop-up has been loaded on your computer. It's designed to stay hidden until you shut down, and then appears on your monitor. That's why I stopped visiting Drudge. After about the third nuisanceware from there showed up, I never went back.

I'm not a Mac person, so I have no idea how to get rid of it, but it's probably set to load into memory at start-up and display at shutdown. That it's loading at startup should give you a clue as to how to remove it. I'm sure the Mac has a feature that autoloads programs at start-up. Look there, and you'll probably find it.

4. Just block pop-ups. And ads. And especially slow, ancient security nightmare Flash. (links)

Surfing is a pleasure on my Mac.

shift-command-k to block pop-ups in Safari. In Firefox and Camino, it's in preferences.

Block ads with http://glimmerblocker.org (Free)

Kill Flash (except when and where you want it) with http://clicktoflash.com (Free)

12. I had a similar problem with my Mac
I was using system 10.4, and I would often get an annoying pop-up whenever I was logged into this web site. After Skinner checked to make sure it wasn't a problem on DU's side, I have a security expert check my Mac out and he discovered that I had a trojan. So he loaded some software to delete the trojan, and that took care of the problem.

13. Find image source, block that source. It might be "d13.zedo.com", for example.
