Phillipe Cousteau dived the GoM live on cnn/Rick Sanchez

Phillipe and a cnn corespondent dived 48 miles from the site of Deep Water Horizon. It was live tv, and they did an interview from maybe 20 feet below the surface. They wore dry suits to protect them from the toxicity, similar to a hazmat suit. They stated that these waters are usually (pre-disaster)clear and blue, but today it was a murky mess. Visibility was maybe 20 feet, and the cnn corespondent said that although Phillipe was right next to her, he appeared blurry. They said that they could see strings of oil blobs, and that there was a lot of dead ocean life floating in the water column. The only live thing that they saw was a shark.

Amazing television.

Then Rick Sanchez follows up the live dive with a marine toxicologist and asks her the question that needs to be asked--and answered--over and over: Is the use of dispersant more harmful than not using them. To summarize her answer--more harmful.


I am sorry that I don't have a link, but I thought it was an outstanding report. Oh, I almost forgot to say that the correspondent had to clear her mask underwater. I am worried for her because her face and eyes were exposed to that toxic sludge. :(
