JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - State revenues have been down for months now as Governor Haley Barbour made five rounds of cuts for the 2010 budget.

Meantime, state lawmakers continue to see two retirement pensions: the Public Employees Retirement System and Supplemental Legislative Retirement Plan.

In 1989 state lawmakers voted this measure in for the sole purpose of receiving extra incentive for serving in the legislature.

From the Mississippi Code of 1972, SEC.25-11-301 it states, "This article... is designed to provide more benefits for members of the State Legislature and the President of the Senate by reason of their service to the state."

1. "...the sole purpose of receiving extra incentive for serving in the legislature."

I've got to use that one on my boss: Hey, give me a raise...NOW!!! I need an "extra incentive" for coming into work next week!

"extra incentive" = "we want more money!" -- the magic of euphanisms...

2. Talk about entitled and privileged!

They already receive plenty for their "service" to the military-industrial-corporate state. I really don't see it as public service anymore. That rhetoric sounds like they are sacrificing something else to do something altruistic for the benefit of the citizens ... ah ... I mean, consumers. Granted there are a few career politicians that have good hearts and do struggle for the rest of us, but I hear their are also albino palmetto bugs.

It is so uplifting to know that state lawmakers get two retirement pensions when many of us look forward to none. To make matters worse, we see death as the only retirement we will have.
