Marcy Wheeler

In "Anatomy of Deceit" blogger Marcy Wheeler condemns the Bush administration, saying the Vice President's office deliberately "outed" CIA agent Valerie Plame, wife of former ambassador Joe Wilson. Further, she criticizes the mainstream media for their complicity in promoting the administration's rationale for war in Iraq -- that Iraq was on the verge of acquiring weapons of mass destruction. "The Anatomy of Deceit" is the first book published by Vaster Books, a joint venture of DailyKos and FireDog Lake.

Marcy Wheeler is a business consultant. She writes under the name "emptywheel" on The Next Hurrah, a political blog.

A War Of Frontier And Empire: The Philippine-American War, 1899-1902
David Silbey

David Silbey relays the history of the Philippine-American War that took place from 1899 to 1902. The conflict divided into three incursions first pitting Spain against allied U.S. and Filipino forces. Spain was defeated and the war shifted to a battle between the United States and the Philippine Army of Liberation. Finally, the occupying U.S. forces came under attack by a Filipino insurgency. The author contends that this series of conflicts provided the Philippines with a national identity, one which did not exist before the start of the war. The war also provided an early glimpse of America as a global power.

David Silbey is an associate professor of European history at Alvernia College.

49. This was a fascinating guy talking about comp religion but
also the way religion in all its dimensions has been collapsed into only morality in the States. He mentioned that Christians have gone from knowing whats the Bible says to having a "relationship" with Jesus. He also said that all religions don't have the same goals, e.g., Christianity resolves sin, Buddhism resolves suffering. Very interesting. I'd like to read this one.

Medical Apartheid: The Dark History Of Medical Experimentation On Black Americans From Colonial Times To The Present
Harriet Washington

Journalist and medical ethicist Harriet Washington details medical research on African Americans from colonial times to the 20th century. She describes the "Tuskegee Syphilis Study" that began in 1932 and was conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service. Almost 400 African American men were withheld treatment for syphilis to study how the disease would affect them in its late stages. The author contends that this is just one of several experiments that shaped the way in which African Americans relate to today's medical industry.

Harriet Washington is a Visiting Scholar at DePaul University School of Law. She has been awarded the Congressional Black Caucus Beacon of Light Award and investigative journalism awards from the National Association of Black Journalists.

The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil
Philip Zimbardo

In "The Lucifer Effect" psychologist Philip Zimbardo explains how particular situations and group dynamics can lead normal, moral people to behave in immoral ways. He cites the treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib as an example. Mr. Zimbardo draws on the findings of his Stanford Prison Experiment, in which a group of student volunteers were arbitrarily divided into "guards" and "inmates" and then placed in a simulated prison environment.

Philip Zimbardo is professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University. He has also taught at Yale University, New York University, and Columbia University. He is the author of "Shyness" and co-author of "Psychology and Life." In 2004, he was an expert witness in the court-martial hearings of one of the American army reservists charged with criminal behavior at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

The Fire: The Bombing of Germany 1940-1945
Jorg Friedrich

The Allied bombing of Germany during World War II resulted in 600,000 casualties - 70,000 of them children - and devastated the landscape of historic cities such as Dresden. In "The Fire," German historian Jorg Friedrich combines narrative, first-hand testimony, and history to depict the air-raids as they were experienced by German civilians. He also considers Allied rationale for the bombing and whether or not the campaign influenced the war's outcome. Since its initial publication in German in 2002, the book has been translated into ten languages.

German-born historian Jorg Friedrich worked as a broadcaster in Berlin before covering the Majdanek Trial in the 1970s. He is author of "The Cold Amnesty," which was a bestseller in the Federal Republic, and "The Law of War." "The Fire" has been translated into ten languages since its first publication in German in 2002.

Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right: How One side Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve
Bernard Goldberg
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0507/btv050507_4c.ram

Bernard Goldberg criticizes both liberals and conservatives in his book, "Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right." The former CBS newsman portrays liberals as hostile to the military, Christianity and American values. Republicans, he says, don't stand up for their own principles, such as small government and opposition to racial preferences.

Bernard Goldberg spent twenty eight years as a reporter for CBS News. In 1996, while still at the network, he wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal accusing broadcast news operations of having a liberal bias. Mr. Goldberg expanded on that theme in his 2001 book, "Bias." He is currently a sports reporter at HBO.

Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/afterwords/0507/arc_btv050507_4.ram

Jabari Asim describes the historical underpinnings of the racial epithet. From its first usage to its current proclivity and redefinition in current popular culture Mr. Asim contends that the word should not be used in casual conversation as its true meaning is meant to demean and degrade. Instead, Mr. Asim contends that the word can be engaged by a select group of artists and public persona’s whose intentions are to twist the word and progress African American identity and culture.

Jabari Asim is the deputy editor of the Washington Post Book World. He also writes a syndicated, weekly column on popular culture. Bakari Kitwana is the author of three books "Why White Kids Love Hip Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes and the New Reality of Race in America," "The Rap on Gangsta Rap: Who Run It? Gangsta Rap and Visions of Black Violence," and "The Hip Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture." A former executive editor for The Source magazine he is also the co-founder of the National Hip-Hop Political Convention.

The Supreme Court Opinions of Clarence Thomas, 1991-2006: A Conservative's Perspective
Henry Mark Holzer

In his book "The Supreme Court Opinions of Clarence Thomas," Henry Mark Holzer sets out to defend the record and character of Clarence Thomas against what he terms unfair portrayals of him in the media. He analyzes many of Justice Thomas's nearly 350 Supreme Court opinions and concludes that Justice Thomas is a formidable intellectual deeply committed to the Constitution and its principles of federalism, separation of powers, limited judicial review, and regard for individual rights.

Henry Mark Holzer is professor emeritus at Brooklyn Law School. He has co-authored two books -- "'Aid and Comfort': Jane Fonda in North Vietnam" and "Fake Warriors: Identifying, Exposing, and Punishing Those Who Falsify Their Military Service" -- with his wife, Erika Holzer.

Collateral Damage: How High-Stakes Testing Corrupts America's Schools
David Berliner

From Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC, David Berliner argues that high-stakes testing, mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act, compromises education. In his book, "Collateral Damage," Mr. Berliner writes that the pressures of high-stakes testing lead to corruption -- increased cheating among both teachers and students -- and deprive students of a well-rounded education.

David Berliner is an education professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. "Collateral Damage" is co-authored by Sharon Nichols, who teaches at the University of Texas in San Antonio.
