Can anyone help me with questions about labor law in Maine?
Specifically in the case of a girl scout camp.

Is it legal to require employees there to work 14 hour days, five or six days a week, with a two hour break?

Is it legal to do so for a single lump payment which breaks down to $200 a week, or about $2.50 per hour? Even when you consider that they're technically charging the employee for room and board whenever they're at the camp?

1. Probably.
While I can't find the relevant laws, it appears that camp counselors are exempt from minimum wage and overtime laws in Maine.

2. you can use the state's "ask a law librarian" service... pretty cool actually
http://www.maine.gov/legis/lawlib/refemail.htm

Reference librarians will research, and respond via e-mail to, requests that can be answered briefly and are of a legal, legislative, or governmental nature. We check for incoming requests each morning and generally respond within three working days. In-state requests are given priority. For requests coming from out-of-state we supply only Maine-related information. If you have a lengthy or involved request please consider calling the library at (207) 287-1600 or writing to us at: 43 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0043. We are open MON-FRI, 8:00-5:00 EST.
If your question is answerable with internet resources we will respond with the information or the appropriate internet address where it is located. Some questions can only be answered by photocopying or lending materials and sending them via mail, fax, or FedEx. In that case service and copy charges may apply, as well as varied lending policies. Before we can send you photocopies we need your consent to be invoiced. Please check the permission box below.
