The implication of "party loyalty" first is that your positions shift whichever way the wind blows. If the Dems say it is correct, you will go that way.

I first realized this when Clinton got into power and suddenly certain wars were okay with previously staunchly anti-war politicians.

Keep true to your own beliefs. Use your heart as a landmark by which to navigate, not political expediency.
