Sue Dvorsky, of Coralville, took over the party this summer after former chairman Michael Kiernan stepped down for health reasons. As its leader, she faces a number of challenges.
Secretary of State Michael Mauro announced this week that Republicans have cut in half the 100,000-vote lead Democrats had in registered voters, and early polling has shown both Gov. Chet Culver and Democrat Roxanne Conlin trailing in the governor and U.S. senate races.
Some have suggested there's also an energy gap between the two parties, best illustrated by their state conventions. Democrats had 500 or so delegates show up, barely enough to allow them to conduct business, while more than 1,300 Republicans participated in a noisy convention where former Gov. Terry Branstad officially launched his comeback bid.
In addition, the November election is the first midterm election of a new Democratic president, historically a good election for Republicans.
But Dvorsky rejected suggestions of trouble, saying Democrats are following the game plan that's brought them success in past elections: They've deploying an army of young people across the state to knock on doors and run phone banks and get voters to the polls.
