91. Broadly and generally
I think it means do you support the concept and idea of unions and approve of their purpose. That is my guess. Nothing is perfect. Every union is different and every one flawed in some way because they are run by people. Do you support Unions in a broad and general sense is a pretty straightforward question.

26. Unions-- the historically proven solution
to American social problems.
Study U.S. history from 1877 to 1955-- Unions were the most visible and powerful players in the economy.
They asked for regulation, and after much struggle got it.
The eight hour day? Thank unions.
The undermining of the eight-hour day? Thank Ronald Reagan and every administration since.
Social Security-- if unions had not been breathing down the necks of the comfortable it would never have come to pass.

46. my union has my back, utterly....
One need only read the list of bargaining positions my employer brings to the table at the beginning of each contract negotiation to understand how valuable my union is for my continued job safety and security. My job probably would not exist in its present form if not for my union-- the system administrators would LOVE to replace all us tenured professors with itinerant academic labor. Too many of my friends are caught in that trap already!

Who else is on the side of the 'people' against the corporation? The corporation has its CEO, board of directors, President, VP, etc who pretty much all are united in their goals of furthering the company's profits, workers are each on their own without a union.

They've done a lot of good for workers in general.

Like all other large organizations, they are also prone to corruption and abuse of power.

The reasons in favor are well stated above.

Nothing is perfect and unions aren't - but they are what the members make them. On the whole they are a positive force in the workplace.

I think more people would be pro-union if they understood the upside and weren't in fear for their jobs.

I want American workers to join the race to the bottom of the wage scale. Maybe someday we can beat out Bangla-fucking-desh!

Why don't people understand that the prosperous 1950's and 60's had the highest marginal income tax rates on the top earners, and high union memberships? The free-market assholes cut taxes for the rich and are in the act of killing the unions.. and the economy is in the shitter. 2+2=5 to those dumbshits.

Even Henry Ford knew you had to pay your workers well enough to buy your product.

74. i have been a member of a few
2 things wrong with SOME unions

1- unions that protect bad workers. some unions have a credo of 'our members can do no wrong', which leads to all manner of bad things.

2- unions that become an end unto themselves. i was once a member of the mob controlled chicago restaurant workers union, which fought for the right to have their members paid minimum wages. seriously.

imho much of the current disfavor around unions stems from mob infiltration and the attendant violence and thievery. (although which came first is a point for debate.)

i am in favor of good, representative, responsible unions. i would rather, tho, that all workers have a stronger protection in federal law. after all, it isn't the unions that need protection, it is the workers.

If anyone isn't, they should read a bit of history about the horrific working conditions and pay in the 19th century, and give thanks that unions now exist.

While you can certainly be critical of specific actions by specific unions, why would anyone who was *generally* anti-unions be posting on a left-of-centre board?

Sadly many of them *are* actually Dems. The party is moving rightward. Arguments exist that these people cannot truly be Dems or liberals if they are anti-union, but I think that falls under the No True Scotsman fallacy.

88. I was once a member...
...of a store bought, mob run New Jersey union.
It did nothing for us but party on the dues we paid.
However, broadly and generally speaking, I am very pro-union.

90. I am Pro-Union
Broadly and generally and every other way. I think that workers should always have the ability to bargain collectively. I don't think that every manager is out to screw people over, but businesses, especially for profit businesses are charged with making the most profit possible. That means 2 things, increasing production by any means, and lowering costs by any means. That motivation inevitable pits the owners and management of the business against the needs and desires of the workers. Unions, with their numbers can counteract some of what the capitalist does with their monetary might.
