These suckers do not plan to leave office, but rather dispense with Government all together. I would be looking for another Terror attack in the not to distant future, probably in DC.... JMO

25. ...maybe not DC
They need the government mechanisms in DC to siphon our tax dollars into their own pockets. Unless they've already constructed bypasses. I was thinking they'd hit the west coast. So I guess we'll see.

They wanted to invade IRAQ so bad that they needed an excuse to lie to the people in order for us to believe them, then 9/11 happened. Now I ask you, "WAS THIS A COINCIDENT OR A PLANNED REASON TO INVADE A COUNTRY THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11 OR ATTACKING US?"

Yea, they MADE IT HAPPEN ON PURPOSE, just as they will the next http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=860772&mesg_id=860772">"decapition" attack. 127. I believe we'll have elections.
The problem is that BushCo. will still have enormous economic power, and massive tracts of land in South America on which to train a formidable private army. They will continue to peddle influence and buy silence -- and that's what scares <i>me</i>.

204. Many formations have been compromised
by religious fifth columnists and their influence, it's true.
You have to look only as far as Colorado Springs to see it the Air Force academy.
But I think its pretty likely our military won't tolerate the deployment of a modern day SA or SS either.
In the absence of that the problem with staffing your military from the lower economic castes is that they take exception to firing on tier own citizens. Most of the actual trigger men and women just won;t do it.

72. In those years, Bushco used election shenanigans to retain office
and could still maintain the look of legitimacy. In '08, they can't run, so stealing elections won't work. They can't get a constitutional amendment in time so their only option for retaining power is to demolish the democratic process altogether. With these folks, it's all about the power. How else are they going to keep it? Do you think they are going to voluntarily give it up? Many here don't think so.

Remember when the liberals accused * of election fraud, and people said we were crazy?
Do you recall how liberals assailed * for having foreknowledge of 9/11, and people said we were nuts?
Has it occurred to you that liberals called * out for politicizing Justice, and people said we were making mountains of molehills?

If you think this country doesn't need liberals, you're the one drinking Kool-Aid.

We're just one "7/7" away from being under dictatorship ...

I have been saying that the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001 would never have occurred under Gore because Osama bin Laden would have been chuckling over the CNN coverage of Bush and his NRA/Religious Reich-initiated civil war "heroically" and "patriotically" trying to wrest the White House from "illegally installed Gore" had Sandy voted with the legal system, not with her intent to "retire under a Republican President" ...

not preventing the 9/11 Attack. They could have spun casualty estimates to about 80,000 dead and nobody could have argued. The terrorists would have readily confessed (Israeli Intelligence following them and all). Bush could have still gone into Afghanistan and attacked Iraq on the same false premises.

There were MANY surprises that night and good surprises I'll add, but there was plenty of hand wringing going on even here on DU, and it was close. The Senate is still basically a toss-up.

I think they were caught off guard, remember rove talking about having "the math".
Maybe typical rovian psyops, but I think they were blown away with the results.

Look, I'm not looking to argue, actually I want to be wrong about this, but I have a deep distrust and loathing for this gang and would put nothing past them.

39. Replace the .mil with Blackwater?
Edited on Fri May-11-07 12:39 PM by meldroc
There's an evil plan for you... Send the military to an unwinnable war, make sure they do not have the manpower, equipment or support required to keep themselves together, and watch it slowly go down the tubes.

Meanwhile, bring in the mercs! Expand their training facilities, throw them billions in no-bid contracts, get them blooded in Iraq and experienced in armed combat, and make sure nobody really knows what they're doing - all is under a veil of secrecy.

The one drawback is that in order to forcibly pacify the U.S. if martial law is declared, you need about one soldier for every forty members of the population (note that the .mil doesn't have that 1-40 ration in Iraq, which is why they're playing an unwinnable game of Whack-a-mole.) For the U.S. population of about 300,000,000 people, you need an army of 7,500,000 troops. Even the U.S. military has less than one million service members. It would take a hell of a secret buildup to bring Blackwater and its ilk up to 7.5 million.

Blackwater, formidable as they may be, does not have 7.5 million mercenaries. All the mercenary companies working for the BFEE combined don't even come close to that number. The best guess I can find says that there are about 100,000 mercenaries in Iraq.

So I'm not that concerned yet. Methinks that the neo-fascists trying to destroy U.S. democracy aren't ready for martial law, and won't be for some time - they know that if they try a coup, they'll be wiped out. So the present strategy of pretending to be a democracy, complete with rigged elections, will have to do for now.

Contingencies for nuclear terrorist attack

As concerns grow that terrorists might attack a major American city with a nuclear bomb, a high-level group of government and military officials has been quietly preparing an emergency survival program that would include the building of bomb shelters, steps to prevent panicked evacuations and the possible suspension of some civil liberties.

The PEOPLE haven't had a real presidential election in years. And I don't think they will make it that obvious by not leaving. They will simply install someone like them to continue their policies. They have subtlely taken our Democracy and rights from us and there is no outrage. I don't then think they will change strategy. They will simply pick the Chariperson of the Military/Industrial complex and hold some fake election with smoke and mirrors to continue the illusion. And as far as declaring martial law, that was done the day Bush signed the Military Commissions Act and this Congress allowed him to. We don't have a representative government anymore, which is why all of this bickering over the presidential election and the money spent and the sound bites and the rhetoric to me is all one big waste of time and just part of the illusion.

...because I distinctly remember voting for Clinton twice and he won twice. I distinctly remember voting for Carter. Sometimes we win; sometimes we lose. It's pathology to claim we don't REALLY have elections on the occasions when we lose. I'm not denying they stole the election but that was pretty in-our-faces and not any kind of clandestine subterfuge or mystery. It's was chads and SCOTUS and having a brother as governor of a contested state. No mystery really.

I have never heard of a coup in a country of 300 million folks. How exactly would that work? ...and if you think talking about elections and politics, etc. is pissing in the wind, why exactly are you here, rather than stocking up on firearms and dried beans?

If you do not think there was something really fishy with them, you have NOT been paying attention

But when historians decide to finally look at it, the word coup may pass their lips.

It doesn't look one bit like this country full of spoiled rotten materialistic people, with Hummers and IPods and etc. THIS is not what a coup looks like. Coups look like piles and piles of dead people, burning buildings, ordinary folks disappearing in the night, etc.

A couple of crooked elections do not a coup make.

Coups look many ways

What you are describing are MILITARY COUPS

They are not the only type of coup

Political Science is a great field of study as well as History...

The rise of the tyrants in ancient Athens did not involve the army either, or for that matter the rise of the Third Reich

But I stand by what I wrote

2000 was a coup, the rise of a tyranny... just not a MILITARY COUP

whether it's violent or not. There are signs that the military is finally bailing. They can see quite clearly now that they are being destroyed by their own machine. Many of them seem to be deciding the money isn't worth it to watch their own die for no reason other than pure greed. The next year or so should be very telling.

Same with the CIA, many of them seem to have had enough.

200o is a textbook example

They did not use tanks, but the USSC did not have a right to rule in that case, they did

Al Gore told you already that after the USSC ruled they had one other choice, and they were not willing to take the country there

It is just that most people THINK a coup requires the military since our press cals a coup only when it involves armed force

Here is the definition

coup d'é·tat (kū' dā-tä') pronunciation
n., pl. coups d'état (kū') or coup d'états (dā-täz').

The sudden overthrow of a government by a usually small group of persons in or previously in positions of authority.

Now think of the USSC decision of 2000 in this context

Yes, usually they involve violence

and yes, they usually involve an armed force

But 2000 fits the definiom

They both saw ahem a problem in 2000

How about Tom Hartmman

I could go on

Yes you voted for Clinton... but 2000 was far from a normal election

Anybody honest recognizes this

As to them WILLINGLY leaving power... more and more people are comming to the realization that perhaps they will try NOT to

I guess Mike Malloy, who asked me the quesiton. DO YOU HONESTLY THNK THEY WANT TO LEAVE POWER... is also paranoid huh?

but what Senator Frist did on the floor of the senate is exactly what you are doing

Go ahead, report me again

:-)

But most medical organizations actually consider it against their code of ethics to do long distant diagnosis, which is EXACTLY what you (and your friend) are doing

And why Senator Frist got in trouble with the state Ethics board...

Go ahead, report me, seems you cannot discuss anything and will accuse anybody of paranoia or delusions for pointing out that the 2000 elections WERE a coup... and that some folks, some very well connected, have shared their doubts that there will be elections, or that these guys will leave peacefully

There are many ways of skinning a cat... there might be "elections" the question is will they be clean or set a chain of succession like those of oh Ancient Athens that lived through a series of Tyrants.

Santayana, another paranoid freak, put it best

Those who refuse to learn from history, are condemned to repeat it

So once again, is that you Senator Frist? You are engaging in the same behavior.

182. False logic
You voted for Clinton, but you did not pick Clinton to be the candidate.

This is not directed at your personally - any election-related thread is full of posters who swear they will vote for any Dem candidate, whoever eventually runs, even if they are not personally happy with the candidate's record. And that's how it works. Check out the abuse dished out at those who, for example, say they won't vote for Hillary because (whatever). Indeed, such people are served with DU rules prohibiting posters from speaking out against the anointed candidate.

Edited on Fri May-11-07 03:27 PM by Marr
We've watched a steady erosion of civil rights and basic lawfulness of our government for the last six years. These people have suspended Habeas Corpus, for crying out loud. That is not a small thing.

Sometimes I think people have become numbed. We've been sitting in a pot that's slowly been brought to near boiling, but people are trying to convince themselves it's just a little warm.

I don't put this sort of thing past the Bush Administration for one minute. They've demonstrated an outright hostility towards both the public and the democratic process, and they're about to lose power. And now we've got Bush saying essentially, 'oh- and if everybody in Congress... you know, the people invesitigating me, happen to all die at once... I'm dictator". Noting the suspsicious nature of that announcement is not paranoia. And I think we've all seen pretty clearly in recent years that it CAN, in fact "happen here".

125. First of all, I'm talking about Rove and Idiot son, not about "Poppylose"
Edited on Fri May-11-07 06:56 PM by deutsey
Second of all, I think, as the AG inquiry is showing, Rove et al., did indeed try to stack the deck in their favor but they blew it (and they were under more intense scrutiny this time than the previous two elections coupled with an undeniable surge in popular disaffection with their policies).

Third of all, I did not come right out and say "Gosh, these omnipotent demons in human flesh are in complete and total control of the cosmos as we know it."

I implied, basically, that I don't put anything past these assholes. Look what they did in Florida in 2000 to grab power (tens of thousands of disenfranchised voters, the SC intervening for them, etc.), look how they cooked the evidence about Iraq. Look how they've made lots of progress in weakening our basic rights and rolling back about a century of social progress in this country.

Look how they're still in control (albeit not as tightly as they were before). Odd things happen that seem to benefit them just at the right time, is all I'm saying.

Is it intentional...happenstance? Who the fuck knows outside the Bush inner circle. But even the most casual of observers can see that it's been a stacked deck in their favor since 2000 and if you (and other Democrats) can't see that, well, imo, that's part of the reason why they've gotten away with as much as they have for as long as they have.

But I'm not buying it.

If things were that bad, the 2006 takeover of the Senate and House would not have happened.

Was the Patriot Act repealed? The Real Id Act? The Military Commissions Act? Do they not still control their "war" and the mechanisms keeping it going? Are they not getting their funding? Is our voting all of a sudden clean? Are Democrats impeaching them? They gave UP NOTHING in January which is what makes all of this so damned frustrating.

The entrenched, conservative political powers, who have vast economic resources, control of the media and a platform of easy issues to run on, don't really care if George W. Bush is president. Someone else who is equally a pawn, a mouthpiece, will do just as well. Everyone worries about this sort of jackbooted police state developing, and we may see some of that, as with the Patriot Act. In reality, however, all the right needs is a distracted populace, one easily swayed by fallacious arguments, too busy with their lives to pay attention to the ruination of their country.

170. They might have achieved their "decapitation"
of the Legislature back on 9/11/01 if United 93 had reached its target.

173. Yes, there will be elections in 2008.
And Bush/Cheney will leave office the next year. We have a new Democratic President and government.

Nothing to worry about.

That's what the repukes said about Clinton in 2000.

OTOH - they may stage an election, with the outcome "predetermined".

188. Could happen
It's possible . They seem to be holding onto their power and bush has mentioned a dictatorship a few times .

Even if there are elections who's to say we will win and the fix will not be in .

All it will take in an attack on Iran to seal the deal and this is not far fetched , it is quite possible .

At this point this country is in ruins and it will take more than what we have to breath life back into it or to turn it around before it hits a brick wall .

I look back on 9/11 and then Katrina and the damage is still there with nothing done even by our new dem majority .

On top of all of this madness and insanity , bush has lowered the bar so very low that almost anyone running looks good or a better choice .

All the control and the money is in the hands of the criminals now .

189. All I can say is
I fear you're right.

As far as I can see, everything they've done -- from suspending habeus corpus to eviscerating posse comitatus, to a hundred other things -- certainly would point in that direction. The most recent move of putting the shadow government under White House control AND asking all the agencies to come up with plans for a major attack on the government also points in that direction (at least for those of us in the LIHOP/MIHOP camps).

Whatever will we do if you're right?

paying attention to what is/and has been going on, has to have come to that same conclusion...they just keep on, keeping on, and they plow their way through as though nothing can touch them...getting all their ducks in a row...

197. I've been saying this as well.
It's not so much about 2006 for me, although I am rather shocked it has gone "so well for them." No impeach, more NAFTA, Gonzo can thumb his nose and lie outright in court with NADA going on.

Gitmo running strong.

Habeas Corpus still suspended.

Seriously, what does it take? For one of them to shoot someone straight in the face? AND HAVE THEM APOLOGIZE FOR BEING HIT?!

No for me... Oh no! Those are incidental.

Bush has amassed such power into the WH that for them to keep their asses POST election -- They cannot allow a little thing like democracy to put the wrong person in that chair.

200. Is everyone aware they seriously considered this in 2004?
A study was commissioned by the Congressional Research Service, "Executive Branch Power to Postpone Elections." You can read that report here:

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/RL32471.pdf

At the same time the administration set up a study group to consider under what conditions Bush could postpone or cancel the 2004 elections.

This was so seriously floated that the NY Times ran a lead article urging the Bush administration not to postpone or cancel the 2004 election.

So this is not a "crazy" idea at all.

I do, however, think that they peaked around 2004 and could not pull this off today.

206. There are studies and contingency plans for
every possible occurrence.

I'm sure we have a plan to nuke Canada. It doesn't mean anybody's planning to do so.

This is pure hysteria.

208. If you remember 2004, this was not a routine contingency plan
The administration was seriously floating the idea of cancelling or postponing the 2004 election. The story blew up before they had their planning in place. Major newspapers ran lead editorials denouncing the scheme. There was general media debate about whether the bush administration could or should postpone the elections in the event of a terrorist attack (which of course could be manufactured during the days of red, green and yellow alerts).

Giuliani had had a dry run in 2001, right after the 9/11 attacks, when he demanded that the constitution of the city of New York (the City Charter) be suspended and he be allowed to remain mayor indefinitely.

This is not hysteria. As I said, however, I do think that their opportunity to carry this out has passed and it is not likely to happen in 2008. But it came very close to happening in 2004.

210. nonsense
nobody floated the idea of canceling the elections.

Having a contingency plan is NOT a plan to make the precipitating event happen.

It IS hysteria. We will have elections next year.

211. I've presented evidece; I guess you have your gut feeling
Here in the reality based community, we argue about factual issues based on evidence. There are many, many news articles that reported that the bush administration was considering postponing or cancelling the 2004 election. The CRS report was part of the administration's preparations. Speculation reached its height around July 2004, but the mainstream and alternative media shouted down the idea:

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/12/1345237

Bush Administration Examines Ways To Postpone Election
The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security have begun examining ways to postpone November's presidential election in the event of an attack near election day. This according to a report in Newsweek. Last week the Department of Homeland Security asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the cancellation and rescheduling of the election. This came in response to a request from the chief of the newly created US Election Assistance Commission for Congress to pass emergency legislation to empower the Commission to cancel and reschedule elections. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told Newsweek "We are reviewing the issue to determine what steps need to be taken to secure the election."

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2001978137_delayvote13.html

Now, where is your evidence that there was concern that the 2004 election would be cancelled is "nonsense"?

202. If United 93 had reached its target we would have been there already
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=125&topic_id=156515&mesg_id=156599

If United 93 had reached its target and (hypothetically) knocked down the Capitol and wiped out Congress then martial law and a complete take-over would have been a shoe-in.

205. That is a really, really paranoid statement.
Even if, and that's a mighty big if, Bush tried to thwart the American public by cancelling the elections, there is no way the majority would stand for something like that. The Republicans know this. It would not be worth it to them because it would lead to the destruction of their party and destroy their power base. I just don't think the American public is that far gone.
