1. Never ever take your eyes off a two year old near a pool or hot tub.
They can drown so fast. I have a kiddie pool in my backyard with my 6 and 4 year olds and still get nervous. I won't leave them alone.

2. Hell, I wouldn't even let my dog swim in a pool unattended...
I honestly don't know what some people are thinking.... I once had a friend with young kids express their amazement that I was the one (given I had no kids) pointing out the need to rope off the old time (50/60's era) refrigerator being moved out of the house under renovation--so that neighbor kids couldn't find their way in. Geez. Do you have to have kids to have common sense? (sadly many with kids do not)...

3. I don't get it either, some people think I am overly cautious with my kids.
I try not to stand over them and they do play in the backyard by themselves when I don't have the pool filled up. But I always check on them every few minutes. Parents have to be vigilant and safety conscious.

4. This can sadly happen to anyone who isn't vigilant.
I knew it would this summer again, but not to someone so high profile.

All it takes is taking your eyes off a child who is anywhere near an open body of water for even a few seconds. And when I say "anywhere near," I mean even a baby who has just learned to crawl, inside a house that has a sliding glass door open with access to an un-gated pool or hot tub.

And then there are the poor kids who drown in a few inches of tub water.

It's not a matter of "what some people are thinking"...it's a matter of letting themselves get distracted.

I have a friend who lost a very young child when she fell asleep because she and her kids were home sick, and she took some kind of medicine that made her drowsy and she dropped off. The older one and the younger one (they were both under 5) got bored and decide to turn on the bathtub.
