Here's a sign of how we are thinking in Florida these days. My
wife got the renewal of her car registration in the mail today. The absolute last day to pay is in September. She said "I'm gonna wait, I might not be living here then." I am relatively sure that it is BP that caused her to say that, not anything I did....
1. Witnessing the helplessness and incompetence demonstrated
by those whose most fundamental and legitimate purpose is to protect and serve during both Katrina and the BP Catastrophe, should cause any thinking person to consider relocating to a place where such help is less likely to be needed.
Look at Afghanistan. Look at Iraq. Look at the Gulf of Mexico.
We are far better at destroying than protecting and preserving.
6. The business she works for is in tough shape. I am working
for health insurance and very little money beyond that as opposed to just being retired. There is no oil here yet, but I think it is wishful thinking to dream that we will be spared, like hoping our little part of the toilet bowl will stay clean when it is flushed.
10. We all are hoping as much stays clean as possible and we all want
to see that those of you who have to relocate get the help you need to do so.
One thing I remember reading about the Great Depression was about the jalopy families. They would hear of work elsewhere and pack everything in the car and move to that area only to find that things were no better there. They continued in this pattern until they were living in their cars. Hopefully the Labor Department will have a better system in place to avoid this communications problem now.
One year I didn't get one and I got pulled over for an expired tag.
Cost me a bundle to get that straightened out and it even stopped me from changing my auto insurance to a different company as the violation appeared on my record.
I mentioned that I didn't receive the notification in the mail and one of the bureaucrats I had to deal with just smiled and said, "That often happens."
So now I have a reminder on my computer. One nice thing about Florida is that we can renew our tag online.
I use Reminder Fox, a small calendar/reminder utility, which has become indispensable. It sits on the browser and lets me know when to check the calendar. I shall put the tag due date on it. Almost missed the May due date simply because I do not pay attention to what day it is anymore. ( One of the pitfalls of retirement)
