Feds test Gulf fish for oil

Catch kept under lock as evidence against BP

The feds launched a mission Friday to test deep-water fish for Deepwater Horizon oil contamination in areas where fishing is prohibited, which could reopen some areas if the fish prove not to be ta --

NOAA sends fishing crew out to spill site

A crew of government scientists and commercial fishermen left Key West early Friday morning on a seven-day fishing trip to take samples of commercially valuable Gulf of Mexico fish species in an effort to possibly shrink the area closed to fishing.

On Wednesday, according to information provided by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, there were 78,597 square miles of the Gulf closed to fishing due to the unabated flow of oil from the ruptured Deepwater Horizon well, operated by British Petroleum.

The closure comes 120 miles to the northwest of the Dry Tortugas and 190 miles from Key West.

"We're fishing just outside the oil," Lisa Natanson, chief scientist for NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, said Thursday afternoon aboard the 150-foot research vessel Delaware II.

Natanson and her team, comprising seven other scientists, two commercial fishermen and 18 crew members, will use a 10-mile, 200-hook long-line fishing rig put in the water in three-hour intervals.

They're trying to hook swordfish, tuna, dolphin and mako shark. The samples will be catalogued and frozen so they can be tested for pollutant levels.

Natanson said that because the samples collected could potentially serve as evidence in lawsuits brought by commercial fishing companies claiming loss of business, it's important to monitor the chain of custody of the catch.

1. God-dammit leave the ones who managed to escape..ALONE
some of those fish are overfished & endangered enough without catching them just to "see what's up" with them..

better to test the DEAD ones & just curtail fishing of any kind until the gusher's shut down, and then as sites open up, randomly test the caught fish

3. Who has caused the most destruction, big oil or 'terrorists'?
Is there even a distinction?

I can't imagine anything more devastating than what has happened to this country, whether through an energy policy leading to foreign wars or environmental disaster, than the activities, greed and negligence wrought by big oil.

4. 'Big Oil" exacts its terror daily on those unable to oppose their operations.

The impact of Big Oil is far greater than the hyped-up impact of a the middle-eastern rogues. The terror 'felt' from them is actually the greater work of BushCo and the MIC.

7. I think the answer is the failed leadership that has allowed both
to happen. They are the real cause of the devastation.
