NOAA sends fishing crew out to spill site
http://www.keysnet.com/2010/06/25/232964/noaa-sends-fishing-crew-out-to.htmlA crew of government scientists and commercial fishermen left Key West early Friday morning on a seven-day fishing trip to take samples of commercially valuable Gulf of Mexico fish species in an effort to possibly shrink the area closed to fishing.
On Wednesday, according to information provided by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, there were 78,597 square miles of the Gulf closed to fishing due to the unabated flow of oil from the ruptured Deepwater Horizon well, operated by British Petroleum.
The closure comes 120 miles to the northwest of the Dry Tortugas and 190 miles from Key West.
"We're fishing just outside the oil," Lisa Natanson, chief scientist for NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, said Thursday afternoon aboard the 150-foot research vessel Delaware II.
Natanson and her team, comprising seven other scientists, two commercial fishermen and 18 crew members, will use a 10-mile, 200-hook long-line fishing rig put in the water in three-hour intervals.
They're trying to hook swordfish, tuna, dolphin and mako shark. The samples will be catalogued and frozen so they can be tested for pollutant levels.
Natanson said that because the samples collected could potentially serve as evidence in lawsuits brought by commercial fishing companies claiming loss of business, it's important to monitor the chain of custody of the catch.
