if you wanted to hurt the economy, you might want to cut off benefits for the unemployed so that they can't possibly pay off their debts, and have to declare bankruptcy.

if you wanted to make sure that lenders and homeowners lost even more money on real estate, you might make do your darndest to prevent any kind of relief for homeowners being buried under mounds of health care bills, health insurance premiums, credit card fees and surprise interest rate changes.

if you wanted to make sure that the economy shrank, you might scream for less deficit spending or even for a balanced budget.

if you wanted to make sure the wealth of the nation was disastrously concentrated, you might oppose estate and inheritance taxes, thereby letting money pass tax-free from someone who may or may not have earned it to their children who clearly did not.

if you wanted to make sure that small businesses along our long, beautiful coastlines suffered immeasurably, you might jump at the chance to let companies recklessly release massive amounts of petroleum into fragile ecosystems. and you might even apologize to reckless companies at any effort to make sure that those victims are compensated for their destroyed businesses.
