I can't figure out the ritual hari kari the GOP is performing right now
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 11:44 AM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
They were against any health reform and acted like the only thing we needed to do was that hoary old "tort reform"

They voted against Unemployment compensation in a time of the largest unemployment in decades

They are defending poor little old BP while we watch the wholesale slaughter of the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast

They are alienating giant segments of Hispanic and other minority voters

What's the deal?

Plus, why do they all look like Pillsbury Doughboys in toupees?

1. They are in a battle with themselves over ideology
They are clinging to their ideology rather than helping to solve problems and this is why they should never be given the chance to lead again.

2. I think they call it: "Playing to the base"
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 11:48 AM by ixion
and since their base eats up their spin verbatim, it's easy to play to them.

They do all this under the guise of being "small government," which of course they're not.

3. Firing up their base
while throwing bones to the corporatist wing, which has been feeling a little antsy lately due to the building populist rage out there. The Rethugs know that the mid terms are all about voter enthusiasm ... liberals and progressive enthusiasm has been greatly tempered of late and independents are not well represented in mid term election as a rule. Crazy as they sound/are, this strategy is likely to work well in November.

Unless, of course, they so enrage independents and our base that we actually show up to vote.

4. Most Americans don't know that the republicans are blocking everything - it will all be blamed
on President Obama or entirely on the Democrats. Their reporting with lines like "Democrats fail to show that they can get the votes" in a 57-41 filibustered unemployment compensation package is an example (USA Today) today.

9. And the fact that the Democrats are not doing any of the things they could do to bring
attention to this is also quite telling.

16. This is absolutely true

I believe the media and politicians are so impressed with themselves.

They surely have pulled the wool over all of our eyes - in their own minds.

The media and politicians believe that Americans won't really feel their own economic pain, don't really care about their houses foreclosing and their land being ravaged, won't mind that Dad dies due to lack of healthcare or that Susie is going back for her fifth tour in Iraq, that we're all just too stupid to figure it out.

Why else on earth would they continue telling us that tax breaks for the rich will solve everything? They started chanting this shit during Reagan and they haven't stopped.

And they got their goddamned tax breaks but it sure as hell didn't help anyone. They took their tax breaks and moved their businesses to China.

They are greedy, evil and very, very stupid if history is any indication.

Because, like it or not, there is going to be a tipping point if things in America continue to spiral out of control.

i believe if this were the days before TV and internet and all sorts of distractions, the masses would already be in the streets. The media can only placate people for so long, though.

i just wonder what will finally push America over the edge of its patience,,,

8. The split is not Republik/Democratic but the parasitic oligarchy vs. the rest of us,
and the parasites own both parties. Eventually, enough people will catch on but it seems it will be too late to save much.

12. Well, I know that, but they're not even playing their ritual roles anymore.
It really is like they've shut down the process by not participating at all.

It's just weird.

13. End-game.
They're leaving just as soon as they finish stealing last scrap of our legacy. Most of our "domestic" large-cap corporations are nothing but paper shells with nothing to recover, so they are no longer worried about the courts, and the black hole left where the treasury used to be is so deep that they see that the welfare train is near the end of the track.

Up is down and wrong is right, it's just too depressing today.

I'm out.

10. When you can fix elections, you don't have to answer to the voter
All they have to answer to is the corporate lobby who is lining their pockets.

14. What part of this country knows what they are doing
no where except right around DC and parts of the NE does the public know what is going on. You never ever hear anything about it from the media in most of the country. All they do is bash Democrats.

everytime they make one of these odious statements that sides with some giant corporate interest over large masses of people, they get giant campaign contributions from filthy rich bastards who want to hear government siding with them at the expense of others.

during the couple of months prior to the election, they use the massive funds for advertising and toss out a few red meat issues to whip the masses into a frenzy over things that don't really matter to the filthy rich bastards, such as the federal position on state-level gay marriage legislation. they get re-elected and go back to spending the next 22 months soliciting more campaign contributions from the filthy rich bastards, and repeat the cycle.

"Plus, why do they all look like Pillsbury Doughboys in toupees?" is one of the funniest descriptions I have heard, well, since someone described the faux newscasters as "makeup covered skells."
