Will Texas govenor be a Democrat ? Polls says White even
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/poll-rick-perry-and-bill-white-tied.php
The new survey of the Texas gubernatorial race by Public Policy Polling (D) finds Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a tied race with his Democratic opponent, former Houston Mayor Bill White.

The poll has Perry and White at 43% each. The survey of registered voters has a ±4.4% margin of error. A key indicator of Perry's vulnerability is that his approval rating is only 36%, with 49% disapproval, while White has a favorable rating of 37%-25%. In the horserace cross-tabs, Perry leads among Republicans by 74%-15%, White leads among Democrats by 76%-10%, and White leads with independents by 42%-36%.

Good Luck Bill

when Katrina hit
He saved those people when he opened up the Astrodome and the US Government did nothing
He is fantastic in emergency situations

in fact Obama could use him now

30. I shudder at the thought of Obama in Texas...especially, Dallas.
White should win, as he is well-liked and people will work hard for him.

6. When an incumbent is below 50% this early in a race, it's not good news for him/her.
Bill White is a great candidate. Crossing my fingers.

7. Nobody votes in Texas votes because Republicans always win
I'll need to see a lot more than that poll to convince me that White has a chance.

10. I'll be happy to be proven wrong
But I still remember Molly Beth Malcolm's much vaunted "Dream Team" in 2002.

Every single last one of them lost. Except for John Sharp, all of them lost by double digits.

16. so what are you going to do about it?
get out the vote? campaign for White? phone bank? Donate money? or just play arm-chair quarterback? Because if that's all you're willing to do, you don't get to gripe.

15. Long time ago.
Back when much of the South was Democrat, when the Democratic party was the one opposing Civil Rights: that was the heyday for Democrats in the South. That held on for a while. But then Richards was replaced by none other than GWB.

Richards was elected Governor in 1991. I believe the Democratic party had ceased being the opponents of civil rights long before then. And she was replaced by Bush, yes. I was living in TX at the time and was appalled. But "I miss Ann, already" bumper stickers were all over Houston.

It is not impossible for a Democrat to win statewide office in Texas. Difficult but not impossible.

26. I did mention
that the sentiment held out for a while. I was merely identifying what made the state largely Democratic in the past. I don't think that those sentiments can or should be relied upon anymore.

I have a lesbian Sheriff and a black Tax Assessor-Collector.

And my County was an Obama County last election.

Perry IS going to lose in November.

17. And I salute the good people of Dallas County for that too
And Harris County and Bexar (oh, excuse me, Bear County) too, which Obama also flipped from Red to Blue.

The problem in Texas is those damn rural ranching counties in the west, and Hill Country, and the suburban counties like Collin, Denton and Montgomery and Williamson.*

They just outvote us every single time.

*Actually, there might be some hope for Williamson Co. as more liberal Austinites move up north, but it will take some time.

19. No offense, but
that doesn't mean much. Dallas isn't exactly the land of Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity. Metropolitan areas traditionally lean left, but there are quite a few people living in rural areas in Texas, and that's where the problem lies for any Democrat that wants to win the state. It's not hard for a Democrat to win in the city. In fact, it would bode very poorly for the party if they couldn't. But winning the whole state is much trickier.

27. Dallas County voted for Bush 52-45 in 2000. Bush over Kerry in 2004 by 2 points.
Voted for Obama in 2008 by 16 points.

Takes a while but in 8 short years turned into a Democratic County.

11. Very doubtful.
Everyone was all over it when they thought that Kay Bailey would beat him out in the primaries. Now White's their darling. It's not going to happen. I remember back in the day when everyone thought that Kinky Friedman had an excellent chance. That didn't pan out for them either.

18. Welcome to DU!
And I don't believe that ANYONE thought that Kay Bailey Hutchison was going to beat Perry in the R Primary.

She was the most popular statewide elected official in 2009. She lost.

Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn was the most popular statewide elected official in 2005-2006. She lost.

21. Thanks.
There were some people who liked her chances. But then again, the Perry team may have just been scaremongering to drum up interest from his constituents. Who knows.

I didn't think that she'd do well for a number of reasons. I think that she was too left for the conservatives and too right for the progressives. That's not a good place to be in when you're in a state that overwhelmingly goes one way or the other.
