We have worked our asses off the last few years, with tremendous success, turning rural counties in Michigan blue. After decades of going Republican, virtually every precinct in the state was in the play and we made historic gains. What we can't control is do-nothing Republican-lite compromising Democratic party politicians that fail to fight for the working people - fail to fight for much of anything other than hanging on to their own power and catering to the needs and desires of their wealthy benefactors.
The people here are not "numb nuts," but they are bitterly angry with what they see as a betrayal by the Democratic party politicians. An enormous mandate may well have been squandered. Please do not blame working class people for that - an utter failure of leadership, a completely compromised and corrupted party that was more than happy to get into power by holding out the promise of another New Deal, and yet since being in power has sold out to corporate interests at every turn, rolled over every time the Republicans yelled "boo!" and failed again and again to fight for the people.
Meanwhile all hopes for rural people about the issue that really matter - help for the collapsing school systems, an end to Gestapo enforcement of immigration laws, relief from the pressure of "fair trade" laws, increased funding for the public agricultural infrastructure, a solution to the growing health care crisis - now lie in a pile of smoldering ruins. All of those policies have gotten worse under Democrats, and are going in the wrong direction. This betrayal has left a mark here that will not go away. People will be talking about it with bitterness and sadness for a generation.
I watched Moore's Sicko with rural audiences in this state. They know what is going on, they know what is needed, and they voted Democratic in the hopes of getting what is needed. They know who let them down, who betrayed them. The hot shots and intellectuals can parse and spin and split hairs on this all they want, while they mock and ridicule the "numb nuts" and blame them for their failures. People are all done with hearing the excuses - "it was those big bad Republicans who stopped us!!!" Uh huh. The Republicans were able to pass any sort of legislation they liked that would help the rich with 51 votes. But when it comes to helping the rest of us? "We need 60 votes."
