This way to the BP exhibit - Iowa aquarium highlights Gulf oil spill (pic)

This way to the BP exhibit: A worker attaches stickers resembling oil immersed in water to a tank at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. A new exhibit at the aquarium - intended to showcase the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico with sharks, rays and other fish - will instead be devoid of life to underline the environmental impact of the massive oil spill.

Iowa aquarium highlights Gulf oil spill

Wed Jun 23, 2:07 pm ET

DES MOINES, Iowa – The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque (Duh-BYOOK), Iowa, is underlining a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by displaying a giant tank, void of life and adorned with representations of globs of crude.

The 40,000-gallon aquarium was initially intended to be packed with sharks, rays and corals from the Gulf.

Up to 127 million gallons of oil have spilled in the Gulf since an April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers and blew out a well 5,000 feet underwater. BP PLC leases the rig from owner Transocean Ltd.

Museum Director Jerry Enzler says he wants visitors to "pause and consider" the delicate balance of life in the ocean.

1. our science museum has an exhibit sponsored by BP
so (for some mysterious reason) I don't think we'll be seeing anything like that here.

Prestigious institutions defend links with oil firm as artists and green activists plan action

---
But the main recipients of BP's corporate largesse – the Royal Opera House, Tate Galleries, British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery – today issued a joint statement defending the connection and signalling their determination to preserve the commercial relationship.

The calls for cultural institutions to distance themselves from the oil industry comes at a time when government spending on the arts is about to be slashed amid efforts to cut public debt.

Many of Europe's leading artists, donors and cultural supporters are expected to be greeted at the glittering annual Tate summer party by Lord Brown of Madingley, chair of the Tate and former head of BP.
