How do you determine which generation American you are?

Okay, so lets say someone is born in America to an illegal immigrant or an immigrant with green paper. Then that child is raised in America but when he comes of age, goes abroad and marries a native from another country. Let's say that the children are born in that foreign country, but get naturalized as Americans. And then, the grandfather who was an illegal alien gets naturalized American afterward. What generation American are the children? Second or third?
