The iPhone craze going on today...
is symptomatic of the problem with this society. It's all about having more stuff. It's all about status. It's all about being a consumer and not a citizen.

I'm thoroughly disgusted.

That is all.

Someone needs to take a time out. Toy worship is a sign of a weak mind. :eyes:

33. If
someone needs a time out you might want to look inward. Some of us actually use this phone as a tool not a toy and quite frankly my iPhone has paid for itself many times over and no I wouldn't wait on line for one that's why the FedEx guy handed me mine this morning.

A weak mind is one that can't fathom the possibilities.

14. I don't think anything that costs $400 is a status symbol
It is another, and better, version of a Blackberry basically.

I think we no choice but to be consumers -- but that doesn't preclude being a citizen. I think the dichotomy is between being a spectator and being an active citizen and in that, we are encouraged, by the MSM, to be spectators.

27. Sure it is
A symbol of one's status as a member of the middle classes who can afford to spend US$400 on a mobile phone (when other things will do the job cheaper and equally well); but then a Blackberry is the same thing--you live in NYC; I suggest your perspective is distorted by location. In Manhattan an iPhone or Blackberry may be an 'everyday necessity' for a lot of people. Elsewhere, not so much.

20. I chuckle at the gadget crazy culture amongst my friends & coworkers
Well, it's more like what I would consider "affectionate contempt"

Now the new "buzz" about them is the I - PAD since someone got one. They're going nuts about it. Thing is so big and clunky it may as well be a stone tablet and makes more annoying childish "app" sounds than what you'd hear at a Chuck-E-Cheese convention. You can't even talk on it? Anyway, I thought the trend was to go smaller.

25. I used to be a tech snob; now I own an iPhone because ...
... it serves two really good purposes, shortly to be revealed. At one time, I looked with disdain on people who owned cell phones of any kind. I, too, thought they were just enjoying their latest cool toy. And I once looked down on people who relied on answering machines, instead of just picking up the damned phone. 'Ere long, I started a business and had five answering phones at one point.

And then one fine day, a guy with a long criminal record followed my daughter down the freeway, trying several times to run her off the road. It was an hour of hell for her until she got into the edge of town and drove up to the closest police department location. She managed to get the guy's license plate number, and reported it to the police. She was essentially informed at that point that it was a case of her word against the guy's, and she might be safer not to haul him into court. But the truck he was driving belonged to his employer, and she got him fired.

If she had had a cell phone, she *might* have been able to call for help. Having a cell phone is a safety item, not just a frivolous toy.

Why the iPhone? Because we operate a small business, and having a hand-held phone/computer is a major convenience when we are on a trip or even just have to be away from the home/office for a time. It has often kept me from having to go back home to tend to business.

As to cell phone etiquette, there is no one on the planet who gets more annoyed than I do at the absolute spaced-out rudeness of people using cell phones -- in the public toilet, in the booth next to me at a restaurant, standing right next to me in the middle of an aisle, blocking it, and sharing intimate details with anyone in sight. And I'm not talking teenagers here. I'm talking "adults" who've been around long enough to have had some raising and even to give some to their own progeny (doubtful).

Back in the pure old days, my grandmother did her wash with an old-fashioned washboard and hung it out to dry on a line, using wooden clothespins. And then my grandfather bought her one of those decadent new-fangled washing machines that did a lot of the work for her. That freed up a lot of time that she could use to sit in her rocking chair and crochet.

I feel disdain for a lot of what we see as normal social behavior these days, but let's not blame technology for all of it.

It's good, as an American citizen, to have the right to do that which others don't wish to do, as long it's legal and does no harm to another individual.

45. People wanting iPhones is symptomatic of the problem with this society?
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 06:33 PM by slutticus
Can you elaborate a bit on that?

I don't see how it's about having more stuff. You think these people are buying multiple iphones for themselves? How do you know what other stuff they have?

Status? Everyone and their fucking grandmother has an iPhone. How is that about status? If I wanted to pretend to be "cool", I would complain loudly about how much I hate iphones (Hmmmmmmm.....)

And lastly, I don't even know where to begin with the last statement..... "It's all about being a consumer and not a citizen." One cannot be a consumer and a citizen simultaneously? Are these people skipping jury duty to stand in line or something? I don't understand.

46. My wife and I each have a simple and cheap Tracfone (pay as you go)
Other than needing them to make SHORT calls of importance to our physicians, friends, and relatives or in an emergency, it lets us make phone calls to each other, if one or both of us are away from home, when and if necessary, and that is all we both really need. No subscriptions, no monthly payments, no apps, no gps, and last, but certainly not least, no jobs... :(
