Woman Recants Rape Claim, Police Say
Woman Recants Rape Claim, Police Say
Incident Marks 2nd False Rape Claim In Orlando In Recent Months

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An 18-year-old woman said she was forced to drive off a road by another vehicle early Monday morning and raped by three masked men near Lake Orlando has retracted her claims, police said.

The woman told police the attack occurred about 2:35 a.m. in the 5000 block of Rosamond Drive off Orange Blossom Trail in the Rosemont area of Orlando.

According to Orlando police, the woman said she was driving her BMW eastbound when she was forced off the road by a black Ford Taurus. She told police three men then raped her. The woman's car was found at the scene crashed into a fire hydrant, police said.

The woman initially described the assailants as black men in their 20s wearing black clothing and masks, but later told officers she made the story up to get her boyfriend's attention.

....

Some women in Orlando said they are concerned about the recent false rape reports.

1. After the Duke Lacrosse case such claims will have to be carefully scrutinized
And you can thank the Duke Lacrosse "victim" for that.

2. I question the assumptions in that statement.
1. That such claims were not carefully scrutinized before the Duke case.
2. That this change to greater scrutiny, if indeed it is a change, is bad in some way.

6. Scrutiny doesn't seem that bad to me.
I think every person accused of a crime - including rape and child molestation (the "Automatically Guilty" crime) - deserve the presumption of innocence and a thorough investigation of both sides of the story.

4. I have no patience for malarkey like this...
I've counseled rape and incest victims and the majority never report their crimes. A good number keep it
to themselves and suffer in silence. They're afraid that they won't be believed or they're just afraid in
general.

People who lie about being raped make it more difficult for other victims. These liars create a culture
of suspicion around any rape victim, and it only increases the silence of real victims. This often leads
to severe psychological stress, depression and PTSD.

Furthermore, when the general public reads about women lying about rape--they question every woman who
alleges rape. Society is in denial about the epidemic of sexual abuse that happens to children and adults
in our society. How in the world will we ever face the reality--when these rare instances of false allegations
are given front-page headlines?

These women who lie about rape due untold damage to real victims of sex crimes--and they also pervert and distort
the public's perceptions about rape and rape victims. This only helps the perpetrators and it really messes up the
lives of victims who truly have experienced sex crimes.

These stories just infuriate me!

Some poor soul will be put through the ringer to prove she really went through the horror she went through.

Much like Krestinsky in the Trial of the Twenty-One in 1938?

Or do we need additional qualifiers to your statement?

14. I feel sympathy for her in a way.
She clearly knows she has done something horribly wrong that will effect the rest of her life. With todays Internet she may never be able to escape this.

In addition one must understand the complete lack of self worth she must possess not to mention the desperation to commit such a foolhardy act to get the attention of a man.

This sounds like a life that has seen a lot of pain and isolation.

She came clean after the fact and I hope with some more maturity (she is only 18) and some better life experience she can put this episode behind herself and move on with life.

Asking for her reparation (perhaps volunteering in a rape crisis center) is certainly appropriate but I would hesitate to ask for revenge.
