Another Good Reason to be a Bean Fiend........

Tea and coffee support heart health: EPIC Study
By Stephen Daniells, 21-Jun-2010

Between three and six cups of tea a day may reduce the risk of death from heart disease by about 45 per cent, says a new study from The Netherlands.

And drinking coffee, may offer similar benefits, with between two and four cups of day associated with a 20 per cent reduction in risk, according to findings published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.

“We strengthen the evidence on the lower risk of coronary heart disease associated with coffee and tea consumption; however, neither coffee nor tea was associated with the risk of stroke or all-cause mortality,” wrote researchers from the University Medical Center Utrecht.

The researchers proposed that the benefits of the beverages may be due to their antioxidant content, with the flavonoids in tea, in particular, thought to contribute to reduced risk. They note, however, that the underlying mechanism is still not known.

The benefits of bean and leaf

Interest in both tea and coffee is increasing, with the number of scientific papers reporting potential benefits growing. In a recent paper in Physiology & Behavior (doi: 10.1016/j.physbeh.2010.01.035), Mario Ferruzzi from Purdue University stated: “Coffee and tea are two of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world and thus represent a significant opportunity to positively affect disease risk and outcomes globally.

“A better understanding of how the beverage composition impacts phenolic profiles and their bioavailability is critical to development of beverage products designed to deliver specific health benefits,” he added.

7. I'll join you in the long life
I drink lots of tea. Tea wakes me up but does not make me jittery and grouchy as coffee does.

26. You need to try the good stuff. Arab groceries carry some
fine teas. I also like Japanese teas, especially the ones made with roasted barley.

I guess it just depends on each person's chemistry. I can drink a big cup of coffee and fall right to sleep, too. It doesn't even keep me awake.

I wish I could drink coffee like that. BTW, I used to live in Seattle and learned about coffee's affect on me after much trial and error.

24. It definitely effect people in different ways.
I have people in my office who can't drink more than one cup because it makes them jittery, or they can't sleep at night. It's just never effected me that way. If I drink it after 5 p.m. or so, it might keep me up a bit. But I drink it all day.

19. I can drink coffee
and lay right down and go to sleep. Doesn't have the effect on me that it does some people...it may be due to the fact that being Southern and raised on iced-tea (which has its fair share of caffeine) from a very young age (cannot drink milk - never could), that I have a HUGE tolerance for caffeine.

22. The duration of action for caffeine is 8 hours
People who are heavily dependent on caffeine won't have a problem drinking coffee on the way to bed. People who are not dependent on caffeine will have problems if they drink a cup of coffee with supper.

It's why coffee hounds are a wreck until they get their first cup (or five) of coffee in the morning. They're not getting a lift from the caffeine as much as they're stopping the withdrawal symptoms from not having drunk any while they've been sleeping.

9. I gave up coffee because it used to increase my heart beat.
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 08:35 AM by tabatha
I noticed it most at night, when sometimes I would get mild palpitations.

Also, coffee depletes the body of Vitamin B. There is abundant information about this, in fact, I came across this information some 20 years ago from more than one source.

I sometimes drink free coffee at TJs, but it is an insignificant amount.

I think other dietary factors should be considered - such as whether a person is a vegan or not, where lack of B12 can be a problem.

But ---- I think there are definite benefits in drinking tea.

23. That was the case a week or 2 ago here
It's like any substance use or addiction though. Some people drink a few cups now and then (me) get wired and enjoy it. Others drink 2 pots a day and are useless until they get their morning fix. Who am I to judge either way, I have my own vices too.

21. I'll get the same effect from me tay
I just never got to like coffee. I do love a cup of tea and I live on iced tea in the summer. In winter, there is nothing nicer than sipping a cup of jasmine tea while watching the snow fly, the jasmine giving you a hint that summer will be back eventually, bringing more flowers.

It's nice to know theophylline is as good for the heart as caffeine is.
