Both the VA and DoD continue to drag their feet on TBI care
Akaka urging coordination over TBI
The Associated Press
Posted : Friday Jun 18, 2010 21:53:39 EDT

HONOLULU — Hawaii Sen. Daniel Akaka is urging stronger coordination between the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments over traumatic brain injury.

Akaka, the chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and other senators wrote the secretaries of Defense and Veterans Affairs on Thursday, saying TBI has become the signature wound over the past nine years of war.

The senators are calling for prompt action to finalize and implement the Defense Department’s draft policy mandating evaluation and rest periods for those with TBI.

The lawmakers also want the expedited establishment of DoD centers of excellence for military eye injuries, hearing loss and amputations.

1. TBI is expensive.
It requires a lot of special care and therapy, sometimes for the rest of their life. That's why they try to avoid doing anything about it.
