2. Recap Repost
A new dispersant wand was installed:

http://tinyurl.com/23av7m9

On the Skandi Neptune ship, in the water, installed, and working. The last picture shows it accumulating oil gunk after a few hours of use. I can't see those holes remaining unclogged for long.

And something (scrap riser?) is being removed:

Lousy resolution of it being lifted.

And putting it in a box:

Fish!! There is a whole school of them at the upper part of the riser:

Unfortunately the schooling pictures just look like white dots.

And I spotted this one near the BOP:

Part of the Boa Deep C deck:

ROV being prepped for manifold work:

The manifold work is something we've all seen before.

Here's a box above the cap:

And currently there is work being done on the cap:

All of the oil is being blown away below.

It looks like they may be closing another valve.

Fish, can you believe it? Hardy things to swim in that mess.
The cap looks decrepit, like it has been abused.

I thought I saw a eel like creature squiggle away from an ROV one day, but I was pretty sure only tube worms could live at this depth. There are fish at 5000 feet?

3. BP exec says relief well within 200 feet of blown well
Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 09:04 PM by jaxx
June 18 (Reuters) - The first of two relief wells being drilled to plug the massive Gulf of Mexico leak is within 200 feet (60 metres) of the blown-out well, a BP (BP.L) (BP.N) executive said on Friday.

Kent Wells, senior vice president of exploration and production, said the next step will be to slowly hone in on the ruptured well and eventually plug it.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idAFN1813406020100618?rpc=44

And from TOD:
Prof. Goose on June 18, 2010 - 2:56pm
Thanks for posting this ee. I was just about to. This is a big deal--I don't how much it speeds things up--they still have to go through 200 ft of rock, right?

Let's hope...

<-> ROCKMAN on June 18, 2010 - 3:20pm
elwood -- I suspect he means 200' laterally and not the amount of hole they have left to drill. The diagram they put out originally doesn't have a horizontal scale on it. Just noticed a funny thing: in that diagram the oil reservoir is depicted as being 1,000' thick. In reality it's only 60' thick. Maybe one last dicth effort to hype the stock price. LOL. Last I think i saw they had around 3,000' of hole to drill. I hope the put out a more detailed schematic soon.

point, or is this where they pretty much thought they'd be? I understand that they have to laser in on the perfect target and that will take time, but I wonder if it may be completed before August now. Any idea?

I read that it will be 3 to 4 weeks before they can attempt to intersect barring any weather or other problems. And it is extremely rare to successfully intersect on the first attempt.

17. Yay!
:hi:

People still seem to think that the ocean floor around the BOP is solid rock with cracks.

I cannot help them.

It does, however, stand to reason that the BOP and casing are taking some abuse and could fail if we don't get this thing fixed.

Not until one of the relief wells is successful will we be able to rest, I fear.

22. Anyone Got a Link Describing the Composition of the Sea Floor; sediment depth, etc.???
I'd like to have a good source describing the nature of the sea floor surrounding the BOP.

Many think it's drilled right into rock, but my understanding is that there's some thickness of sediment.

I wonder if it's 18 inches, 18 feet, 180 feet, or what.

24. Today's roundup...
Today's big activity was the Glycol Bladder installation. I believe glycol is antifreeze.

The ROV approached this HAL 9000 looking thing on a manifold:

All the lettering I've seen so far has been stenciled, but this choke has instructions scrawled in Sharpie:

And on top of the box:

It looks like something out of a Mel Brooks movie.

They were also working on this basket thing:

Ugly pink sea critter:

And a hot stab in action (the "T" looking device):

What a hot stab is: http://large.stanford.edu/publications/coal/references/ocean/rovs/tools/docs/h1.pdf

36. Really slow today..and a shark.

Ocean Intervention III ROV 2 examined the BOP with this today. I have no idea what that is.

And other than more seabed surveys and the usual dispersant ops, nothing else. It looks like they may be surveying the seabed where the rest of the subsea dispersant system will be placed.

There are also these white blobs floating around:

They've really become noticeable in the past few days. The closest explanation I've http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/10/091008-giant-sea-mucus-blobs.html">found although this is deep water. Who knows what's brewing down there.

In other news, the Viking Poseidon ship has left the site. It's unknown if it will return or not.

I read that they may unbolt the flange for the next step after the cap. Considering how much effort and eventual success the Viking Poseidon crew put into unbolting the scrap riser, it'd make sense for them to return. We'll see.

You can track the ships at the site easily here: http://www.deepwaterbp.com/m_3.asp

And here's a shark checking out a BOP at another site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVsZaTrE7Eo

51. Screencap #2 ;-)

Ok in this one you can see more and it's better quality. The directions I had said save as a gif, but yours was as a jpg and this one is too...much better. Plus I can tweak the jpgs, but not the gifs and the jpg takes up less space...kb wise.

56. Today's recap:

Starting off from the Discoverer Enterprise..

I see what you did there...

A view of the plume:

And dispersant fail:

The yellow dispersant device with the little holes no longer appears to function. Within hours of its installation, hydrates were already building up on the device. So I'm not surprised that it is not being used.

And a new piece of equipment:

Part of the subsea dispersant system?

More fish!

Not to be outdone, our ugly pink friend made a reappearance:

And right into the ROV camera. Fortunately both parties were unharmed.

It looks like this is a http://archive.serpentproject.com/270/">sea cucumber.

Still slow...The Boa Deep C ROVs were moving hoses. Nothing terribly exciting.

60. Thanks,
During these slow days, it's nice to be able to read your recap post to see if I missed anything.

57. 3rd shift subsea.
They are busy while people sleep! I got up so that I can sleep later today for work tonight...and caught them in action.

This is removing the choke...first they took it from one place and moved it to another (this is where they put it:

There are 3 ROVs working together on this one around the cap, one is trying to do something with a tool:

This is the naked cap with the oil blown away...looking more beat up:

And finally...the stuff they have put on top of the cap:

63. Yep it's normal.
Lots of oil and lots of dispersants. But more stuff on the cap...they say 7-10 days until they switch it to the new one.

64. Did you hear they may complete the relief well earlier than expected? I wonder
what kind of photo coverage we'll get on that! I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

Good morning! :hi:

Enterprise Rov2 is working at the cap right now and they have about all the oil blown away so you can really see it.

OMG it looks like they have lifted the old cap OFF!!

73. That's why I bumped the thread last night - because I noticed they had opened the
valves that they had gradually closed when they first put the cap on.

Keep your fingers crossed the new cap will really capture most of the oil.
