Terry Goddard wins national award for Western Union investigation

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard has won a national award from his peers for work related to Western Union money transfers between the U.S. and Latin America.

National Association of Attorneys General chose Goddard as Attorney General of the Year during its meeting this week in Seattle.

Goddard’s work resulted in a $94 million settlement with Western Union, the group said. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigated and eventually settled with Western Union related to suspicious wire transfers between Arizona, Mexico and other countries. Drug traffickers and other criminal syndicates sometimes use wire transfer to send ill-gotten gains back to their home base and cartel bosses.

“AG Goddard very much deserves this prestigious award,” said Paul Charlton, former U.S. Attorney for Arizona. “Terry has taken on the drug cartels, human smugglers, and border crime in effective and creative ways. He is a thoughtful prosecutor whose good work has now been recognized nationally by his peers.” Charlton now works as an attorney for the Gallagher & Kennedy PA law firm in Phoenix. Goddard is running for governor this year.

2. If Brewer lost the court battle
after kicking the elected AG off the case, she would be toast.

Of course, she is counting on the court case happening after the election...

5. Thanks for the link
I hadn't seen the NYT story yet--and it's the one that has the most detail, including the reasons why Clinton slipped the news into her response to an interview question in Ecuador.

When DoJ will file, and when court proceedings will start, is another story. It looks like DOJ is close to filing, and there's a good chance for initial hearings before the law's July 29 effective date.

It looks like things will heat up well before the election, so this will be an issue in a lot of AZ campaigns for local, state and national office.
