Education Official Accused of Sex Act in Meeting
Source: Detroit News

Otis Mathis, president of the Detroit Board of
Education, is accused of fondling himself in a
meeting Wednesday with the general
superintendent, according to documents
obtained by the Free Press.

DPS Superintendent Teresa Gueyser alleges that
during a meeting at about 5 p.m. Wednesday that
Mathis touched himself for 20 minutes during a
conversation about today’s scheduled board
meeting.

Mathis resigned following the incident, effective
immediately. In his resignation letter, he cited
health issues as the reason for his resignation.

2. Why did the superintendent let the "meeting" go on for 20 minutes?
I would have said something or at least called others into the meeting.

25. In the article, she says it's his usual habit during their meetings, & that she tries to ignore it.
Edited on Sat Jun-19-10 04:17 AM by Hannah Bell
WTF?

The first time he did it she should have stood up & left & told him in no uncertain terms she'd have him up on charges if he ever did it again.

If she's sat through meetings with him wanking, she pretty much sent the message that it was ok with her.

this is happening in the midst of the board seeking injunction against robb bobb. what a cock-up.

I guess people put up with some strange crap when they're unnerved or feel threatened but, damn.

Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 05:42 PM by Ken Burch
Board Vice President Anthony Adams today released a two-page letter from Superintendent Teresa Gueyser accusing Mathis of touching himself during a recent meeting. She called it his "usual habit" during one-on-one meetings. She said she tries to ignore it.

"On many occasions, I have asked him not to touch himself," she wrote in the letter dated Wednesday.

20. And worse!
"Superintendent Teresa N. Gueyser filed a detailed complaint addressed to Adams about Mathis, saying he used a handkerchief while masturbating in front of her the entire time she was speaking.

Her complaint says that she has witnessed other unacceptable acts by Mathis and that she had informed him some time ago to have no physical contact with her, including handshaking."

Um... isn't that sexual harassment?

12. You can't un-resign, as we learned from Dan White who went on to kill Harvey Milk.
The Board could choose to re-instate him, but that is not up to him. Once you resign, it's done.

The written allegation is pretty damning, but if it wasn't true, he should never have resigned and simply let the investigation proceed. At this point, the resignation appears as either an admission of guilt or a desire to spare the board the embarrassment of the public scrutiny he will have to endure.

What he needs now is not to fight for his old job, but to hire a VERY good (i.e. expensive) lawyer.

29. Surprising question! Get up, tell him where to go, walk out, and report him
Maybe it's because I'm a Scorpio as is my boss, but we just had a very similar conversation yesterday about our own VERY healthy sense of worth and self-respect. NObody would pull that kind of stunt on me and get by with it. For her NOT to get up and walk out the very first time it happened makes me wonder about HER.

It's a sticky situation for a supt. I've seen several fired for pissing off school board members, even when the supt was right.

33. "It's a sticky situation...." all right. If she did tell a Board member and nothing was done, all
she had to do was threaten to take it to the media. I've worked w/local school administrations before moving to the university level, and there is not enough money printed to go back and be a part of their stupidity.

It's not like a private company. Public school politics can be very nasty. I've seen superintendents fired for reporting milder offenses by school board members.

39. So what? HE has to report to the Board, and the Board is elected in local elections...
at least where I live. And they don't like negative publicity---just like all politicians - they wouldn't risk 'losing their seat' on the board at election time b/c they didn't deal w/this idiot. Sorry, but for my money, she was holding ALL the cards.
