I was dragged through all the stuff when I was a kid, which was a curse being born into an artist family. But I did discover Ghirlandaio later and do prefer him to the more common known artists of this epoch.

and the funny part is that I always enjoyed the cat sitting there, but I didn't occur to me this time that she/he is missing there. So that picture was from Oignissanti. San Marco has the cat. Also a Jesus on the cross on the middle pillar.

Well done! Was fun! Thank you for doing these!

150. If god was everywhere then he is a negligent father who would be in prison if he was human.
Look at it this way. God is supposed to be our father. But if he was everywhere then he knows everything about what is going to happen to you. A human parent would never allow any harm come to their child and if they intentionally did nothing to save their child or put them in danger, they would have their children taken from them and they would be arrested and put in jail.

So if God is our father he is a negligent one who lets his children die or be harmed. I'm always amused when I hear about a plane crash killing 300 but if one person is found alive it's called a miracle. A miracle means there was divine intervention to save that one person's life. So that means god knew the plane was going to crash and decided to save only one out of the 301 passengers. In other words, god willfully and with premeditation killed those 300 people.

If god was a human father and he allowed his children to starve, be in danger or die he would be arrested and thrown in prison with the rest of the deadbeat fathers. He would be charged with all kinds of crimes, like child endangerment, child abuse and child neglect.

So if god IS everywhere then that is an admission he is guilty of premeditated murder, among other things.

But I get your point. I wasn't trying to turn your light moment into a heavy one. But I thought I would share my take on religion and 'faith'.

and where the hell is the chalice? Also, why were they drinking out of glassware? As I recall, that stuff wasn't invented until later and the standard of the day was pewter, something that delivered a nice dose of lead with each swig. The truly poor were healthier because they used gourds or wooden cups.

Oh, and who the hell are all those white people?

The part that's all white; shouldn't that have something on it? It doesn't really fit renaissance art to leave big open white spaces where angels or devils might be painted.

It's a long shot, since the washing of the disciples' feet by JC only appears in the Gospel of SJtB, but some paintings do include the bowl and the water ewer.

Judas, since it was presented on Judas's side of the table. I think in the Middle Ages (this is the late 1400s people still had a superstition about cats).

147. Yeah, I knew you'd know. It was the Deusenberg, a car so luxurious...
...it became synonymous with style and glamour. With status. "It's a Duesy", was the old saying; it has since become bastardized to "doozy". The biggest, fastest, and most expensive car in the world. In the time of the great depression, the things people dreamed about became quite important, culturally.

140. Pretty interesting.
Cats were pretty much demonized and later on, during the witch hunts, you'd better had no cat as a pet. I wonder if, since we're talking the era of Savonarola here, cats weren't frowned upon also because their mating rituals are very vocally - so they stood for lust, too.

146. My mother used to make an imaginary cross on the windshield
if a black cat ran across the road anywhere in front of her. Thing is, she isn't very religious at all. So, it was just a superstition based on nothing. It was something I always thought was weird growing up.

The other weird thing about it is that she liked Domino (RIP), my black cat that I got as an adult. She got along fine with Domino. Domino was super smart and did things on her own. She was highly intelligent and trained like nobody's business. You could train that cat to do anything just by showing her once. I think that is what my mother liked about her. She didn't do any crossing motions around Domino.

154. Little Domino was only 6 years old when she got Feline Sarcoma
She was one of the best cats ever. I could not believe her depth of understanding and intelligence. I still miss her more than anything.

What was strange about her death is that her vet, the only doctor she had ever been to said that those types of Sarcomas usually come from being vaccinated in the side instead of the leg and he only ever vaccinates them in the leg for that reason.

So, hers was one of the rare cases where they get a sarcoma in that area that wasn't vaccine related. It was a fairly large tumor and grew super fast. The vet tried to remove as much as he could and she lived about 3 more months. I still miss her so much.

If I ever get another cat, I'm going to try to do it through the Black Cat Rescue organization: http://www.blackcatrescue.com/
(unless the time comes and a cat just shows up in my yard, as critters often do, and needs a home)

Did you know black cats are only half as likely to get adopted? I didn't know that.

137. Now that I know there are 2 versions of this ... there are MANY differences.
Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 05:37 PM by JoePhilly
The most obvious is that the original has Jesus on the Cross .... but ...

Then there is the position of the head of the person to Jesus's left ... in the original, its on the table, in the one you provided, its not.

Others have mentioned the halos ....

I notice that the original has less dramatic hand locations for all of the subjects.

In the version you provide, one holds a knife, I do not see one in the original.

In the second version you find at least one bored apostle, none above.

Still great fun.

(edit: clarified a point)
