Who else remembers that Nightline actually began as a news show as an ongoing special report, after the local news, about the Iran Hostage Crisis? Every night you'd see, Day 40, Day 150, and so on.

I'm not equating the (admittedly harrowing) kidnapping of Americans in 1979 with this ecocide in terms of long-term implications, nor suggesting that Obama is responsible for W-Cheney's handing over the MMS to the oil industry that contributed to this disaster.

However, I'm concerned that the idiot MSM, which failed to comprehend the historical moment that occurred when Obama tried to gently tell the American public about peak oil Tuesday night (maybe that's what he was telling the pundits about at lunch on Wed), will set this up in their usual melodramatic, hypergraphic way, running that image in the bottom of the screen while pointing the finger at Obama the whole time.

If one ran screens of all the ongoing damage W did during his years in office while trying to tell the 'other news,' you'd have a checkerboard of unmitigated evil. But no one even ran a total of the number of soldiers dead and wounded throughout their entire news program.

I remember how in 1980 Reagan benefited from the daily draining of Carter's credibility due to "It's Nightline. . . Day 256," and so on. People wanted to turn their sense of helplessness and rage in some direction, and Carter was too decent, trusting, and intelligent to imagine his fellow Americans being so fucking stupid. I suspect he's adjusted his expectations downward a bit since then.

1. Perhaps, though BP's continued news blackout may, ironically,
end up helping Obama.

2. Only if Ross Perot hires a team to stop the oil gusher
Seriously, the MSM is not "idiot" -- and they are not public servants. They work strictly for the people that own them.

It is all "Nightline" all the time now.
