I live in AZ. Was just in a heated argument about SB1070
I having my monthly hair appointment with my hairdresser I've had for well over a decade.

He was telling me that he saw on someone's Facebook page someone was bragging about carrying a gun with them at all times while hiking in the desert so that he could shoot any "illegals".

We were both commenting on how sick that was, how that would be murder, etc.

I don't remember exactly how it happened, but the hairdresser next to us jumped in and a heated arguement ensued between my hairdresser and the other one (with me and the other client chiming in from time to time). They've worked together for YEARS, but it was really ugly at times. My hairdresser remained fairly calm, explaining how he doesn't want AZ to be a police state with everyone having to prove themselves all the time. The other one was really angry, swearing, saying that if he were in another country he would have to carry papers. Yeah, but mine countered, the RESIDENTS don't have to!

Well, pretty much all the standard things were said on both sides. It's kind of funny how me and my hairdresser were on one side, and the other two (client and stylist) were on the other. Does like attract like in all areas of life?

Finally, the other client put an end to it saying that her hairdresser was getting too upset and her hair was going to get ruined. Personally, I thought it was pretty unprofessional of him to use such language with a client in the chair, but, it is his salon (my hairdresser rents a chair there) so I guess it's his right.

My final comment (which turned out to be the last) was that we're all stuck here together on this little rock in space and we've got to figure out a way to make it work or we all perish.

Anyway, don't know if this adds to the discussioin of this topic, but I just wanted to post it, because not everyone in AZ is in favor of this law. Not by a long shot. We're not all bigoted, Sheriff Joe loving morans. (Unfortunately, though, there are a lot of them here, I won't deny that).

1. Only comment
My only comment is on the line 'if we were in another country'. That is one of those lines that my only reaction is 'HUH!?'. I thought the whole damn idea was that we aren't those other countries that we are better that we want to held up as the shining example of how things should be in this small world. It makes me want to paraphrase that old parental canard 'If the other country jumped off a cliff would you do that too?'.

4. Actually, my hairdresser made that argument. He said, "I don't
want to live in a country like China! It's unAmerican!"

To which the other one replied, "Oh, so I'm not an American now?"

"I guess you aren't!" And he laughed, which made the other one even more angry.

5. His home. And it may come to that, actually. He has a lot of serious
health problems that may make him pretty much home-bound.

He's already cut down to just working 2 days a week.

If he'd be willing to do it, I wouldn't mind!

:-)

3. Ageed. We aren't all Sheriff Joe loving, Russell Pearce apologists.
These RWers are venting their anger at the economy at the undocumented people rather than where it belongs: the corporations, the stupid stupid stupid AZ legislature, and the unelected accidential governor. A restaurant dishwasher or tree trimmer causes me no harm but the greedy developers demanding sales tax incentives for their empty strip malls sure does.

Good for you and your hairdresser for standing up to the bigotry.

6. Thanks. I brought up the point that it's always the "little guys" that
get busted for being "illegal", but never the "big guys" that rig the system that creates the situation we have.

Until the systemic problems are fixed, I have no interest in punishing people whose only crime is to cross the border illegally looking for a better life. (The people involved in human trafficking and the drug trade and its attendant violence are another story entirely).

8. What about the law going after the employers?
From what I read in the Repulsive, not that many were actually charged or fined for hiring undocumented workers. Ah... but we don't want to hurt business. The well-known commodity always runs downhill.

7. In another country like Venezuela the country can seize assets on a whim
they can't do that here. Does he want the government to seize BP assets to in addition to carrying papers with you? The point is where does it stop? THey like select (usually totalitarian) things about other countries and say that's how it ought to be here. But look out for that creeping Euro-socialism.

9. In the former Soviet Union, the citizens had to carry their papers with them at all times because
the authorities could, would, and frequently asked for them.

Congratulations, the approximately two-thirds of Arizonans that support SB1070. You've turned your state into a smaller version of the Soviet Union. Anyone up for learning Russian and eating borscht?

11. I have all but given up on people learning the truth about 1070
I have done radio shows with experts on immigration, on the Dream Act, laws like 1070 that have gone in effect elsewhere and been changed or removed because of the horrible results. I have posted here, and other places about the real problems and broke down who these people are, shown the comparisons between Jim Crow and this Juan Crow Law, but with limited reactions, with little of the facts being used. I have noticed there is little listening to this issue anymore, little interest in getting in depth on solving it, but instead one side yells racism, the other side yelling they should become citizens, but when the facts are introduced both sides seems to mostly run for cover.

I am reairing a show tomorrow that I did back in May with someone involved with the Dream Act, Immigration here in Arizona, and one who admits she and her husband both will have their rights limited by this law. She also tells how the law had already started to affect Hispanic Americans and also the State as a whole economically. The loss of the Hispanic Community spending in this state alone has already started to hurt businesses and will continue to do so more than the boycotts and yet even with such evidence as 9500 Liberty at YouTube and now Liberty Arizona, seems our efforts to get out real facts are doomed. This show tomorrow is my last show. We are shutting down due to the fact we are listener supported and frankly we just aren't getting the help from our progressive friends to offset the cost. It is with regret that I end my work because the Progressive community can't in some cases, and won't in others support Progressive radio. I do take some comfort in the fact that like us, other progressive shows and networks are in the same boat and will be forced to shut down so it isn't just us. I wish we could support our own better and if we can stop fighting each other long enough to work as a team, we could get some of our dreams to become reality, but sadly I will not be able to take to the airwaves to get that done.

I will continue to post here (at least for awhile) and do what I can to stop this 1070, but it will be harder now since our network will fall silent, not from the right wing, but because of lack of support from Progessives. I have to honestly say, I wonder really how much we want our dreams to become reality, how much do we like the right wing domination of the airwaves since we fail to support our own voices.

13. I've witnessed lots of discussion on both sides of the issue too
It really is a major topic of conversation around AZ these days.

I don't think I'd be happy arguing while someone was waving cutting shears!

14. But it was a dry heated argument
I am so ashamed that I was unable to resist posting that.

I am further ashamed that the day the other hairdresser is stopped for the first time and required to show his papers might just be the day that a thought penetrates his thick skull.
