'Shakedown' is code word for 'mugging'

It's meant to invoke black on white crime in particular. (Hat tip to http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/shakedown-talking-point-of-many-colors.html">digby):

Shakedown: Exposing the Real Jesse Jackson
by Kenneth R. Timmerman
Regnery Publishing, Inc.; ISBN: 0895261081
Paperback - 501 pages (January 2004)

Jesse Jackson is a modern day highway robber who uses cries of racism to steal from individuals, corporations, and government, to give to himself, says veteran investigative reporter Kenneth R. Timmerman.

Until now, however, no one has been brave enough to say it and diligent enough to prove it. But Ken Timmerman has cracked Jackson's machine, found Jackson cronies willing to break ranks, and uncovered a sordid tale of greed, ambition, and corruption from a self-proclaimed minister who has no qualms about poisoning American race relations for personal gain.

Shakedown reveals:

* Jackson's massive defrauding of the federal government - and how both Republican and Democratic administrations have chosen to ignore it.
* Jackson's financial ties to Third World dictators - including Mohammar Qaddafi of Libya.
* Jackson's shocking private life - and his even more shocking public lies, including about his relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King

The hardcover edition is out of print. Only available in paperback.

Publishers note: The San Francisco Oil Company referred to on page 310 and in endnote 61 of Chapter 10 was never involved in the oil transactions described in the book and was not a “front company.”

1. 'Shakedown' is more closely synonymous with 'extortion'
or 'blackmail.' And no, 'blackmail' isn't a racist code word, either. :eyes:

2. Oh, wow. I hadn't known about that book.
I was just going to say that "mugging" might be an appropriate term in one sense--All Obama got was BP's pocket change.

4. Well yeah there was a time when police all over the country had shake downs aimed at
the gangsters of the Prohibition era, not to make arrests but to grab as much boot legger cash as they could carry off. In fact that is when the term "shake down" became popular, remember Capone was based out of Chicago. So there is a double meaning when R's talk about Chicago politics, the mayor of Chicago had deep ties to Capone.

6. My cat's ex-human's friends always brought her treats..
when they came for a visit. She still thinks anyone that comes over will have a treat for her and she "shakes them down". That is how I use shakedown.
