Palin on pot: Smoking a joint in your house no biggie
Guess who isn't too uptight about about pot: Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Key word there: Alaska. Ain't no thing there, as Comrade Fagan recently reminded us.

Mama Grizzly told the Fox Biz Network:

"If somebody's gonna to smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some of the other problems we have in society."

Palin is not for legalization. No. But she thinks the fuzz should "not concentrate on such a, relatively speaking, minimal problem we have in the country."

Even without endorsing legalization, Palin's comments could be a fever dream for the green-budders who want to pass a law in California to legalize and tax cannabis. To have a conservative bold-face name like Palin come out and say it's not a big deal...is a big deal.

4. Palin 2012!!!!!!!!
Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 10:11 AM by mike_c

Seriously though, her stance makes no logical sense-- not that there's any surprise there. She says:

1) Smoking a little pot for personal enjoyment harms no one and should not be a legal issue.

2) Pot should not be legalized.

How can one reconcile those statements? In isolation, you can't. There isn't any reason for marijuana to be illegal if it is harmless. There are perhaps OTHER reasons-- not the least of which is jobs in the prison industrial complex-- but statement #1 undermines any implicit reasons to criminalize pot.

Palin is an utter dingbat-- even when we agree!

10. I think she might be using the same rationalization
as we have here in Mass...

It shouldn't be a legal issue as far as being on someone's record for life, but it should also not be legal.

Just not "criminal".

Whatever...she's still a dingbat.

decriminalization is a step in the right direction. Google just how many marijuana offenders are in prison and you will grasp totally why TPTB do not want legalization or decriminalization.

If pot were decriminalized, then private personal enjoyment of a little pot is not really a legal issue... however it would technically remain "illegal".

20. but that's just a nonsensical dodge....
I don't think it reconciles them at all. If marijuana is harmless-- and it is certainly less harmful than the two most common legal recreational drugs, alcohol and tobacco-- it should not be illegal, technically or otherwise. What is the justification for keeping it "illegal?" The only one I can see is simple inertia, resistance to positive change.

25. "What is the justification for keeping it "illegal?""
So that entrenched criminal cartels ingratiated with government officials can still justify their profit margins, being that manufacturing and distribution is illegal.

So that pharmaceutical & logging & textile companies do not have new market competition to their products

Etc.

60. Disagree.
While she may be the idiot that all of us know she is, the RW'ers take her very seriously.

Legalization is not going to happen with progressives and democrats supporting it alone. It is going to need broad support from both parties to get done. If Palin is the first RW politico to back this idea and it becomes acceptable to discuss for those on the right, this could be a big step forward.

40. Dunno for certain about her kids doing those drugs in particular...
But during the campaign in fall of '08 there were a couple of members posting on You Tube videos featuring Sarah, who claimed that they lived in Wasilla and posted that Track, Bristol and her bf Levi were notoriously heavy drinkers and druggies. Alaska is obviously not immune to the spread of meth in rural areas of the US, and Levi's mom Sherry was busted for "second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, generally manufacturing or delivering drugs, as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.", but I never read anything about what happened to her afterward, and the result of her arrest.

Obviously their posts could have been complete BS, but one of the poster's profile pages did indicate that he lived in Wasilla, and signed up as a You Tube member about a year or so before Sarah became the GOP pick for VP, I now wish that I had bookmarked it.

92. Wonder about that
I knew some christians who were way into weed, they were liberal and younger christians though, also for gay rights. I think some christians dont like anyone having any kind of pleasure that is separate from their version of god, hence their control over sexual issues and involvement with prohibition. Though I could make a much better argument for alchohol and tobacco prohibition than for weed.

96. You seriously ask that?
Have you ever heard her ramble on and on and never complete a thought?

She & the 'Dude' have probably been toking for years man. It's the only explanation.

101. Well, I used to toke for several years, have not for almost 30 years...
In her case, I favor the "dropped on her head repeatedly" theory...probably on purpose, too.

:silly:

46. She's right. Unfortunately, the Authoritarian Right Wing she represents wants none of that.
And she also supports putting a police presence in 150 Million American Uterii, pretty squarely knocking out any "libertarian" labeling that might apply, here.

SHE or someone in her family smokes dope in the house! Otherwise she would hate pot and the people who smoke, as per Repuke brainthink.

79. Even if Palin is in favor of decriminalizing smoking pot
in the privacy of one's home, she still would also be in favor of making it so the pot smoker's "home" is solely comprised of a cardboard box in an alley, if he or she is receiving any form of government-provided "socialist" entitlements.

I despise the grifter from the tips of her painted toenails to the top of her coiffed head.

95. of course
Her argument that we should have laws but just ignore them selectively is laughably stupid. For instance that's basically what is happening with immigration right now... and she's for that right. Oh she's totally against that. If the laws not worth enforcing, it's not worth being a law.
