2. When most of the voters have this attitude towards fuel economy...

...they're more likely to be pissed at gas prices and any perceived extra costs than that black stuff in the swamp.

"Where's that $20 billion gonna come from? Our pockets, that's who! Damn you Obama! Derp!"

4. The 20 billion is just a drop in the bucket compared to the total
"external" costs, like damage to our health and our environment overall that we run up when we use oil.

When we hear the concrete number 20 billion, we are reminded that oil costs us a lot more than the price we pay at the pump. Think of the wars we fight to protect the interests of the oil companies. Those are also external costs that we pay in taxes not in the price of oil.

5. Yeah, "we" are. "They" aren't. They still think oil drilled here stays here.
And that if we just drill enough wells we'll be totally self-sufficient. They don't/won't realize that we'd have to quadruple or quintuple domestic oil production to be self-sufficient... and that if we did that, we'd be dry in 5 years or less. Oh, and OPEC would simply reduce output to compensate until we needed them again.

Drill, baby, drill! or whatever...

3. Just keep praising Jaysus publicly and we'll have it.
Nothing works like references to prayer to get all the "Amens" going.

Think I'm joking? I was born and raised in the South. I should know.

6. Probably not.. deep-seated ideology will "win" even if it's proved wrong over and over
The people who will get checks will still never be "whole", and many who think they deserve a check will not get one..No doubt the ones who get a check will be convinced they got it because their republican rep FORCED the gubbmint to give them one.

Civil rights legislation in the 60's is something that many of them see as their "line in the sand", and they will never forgive dems for changing their lifestyle.

8. you're nuts. I'm sitting in a motel room in Alabama right now and I can
say with confidence that public opinion down here blames Obama and the Godless left at least as much as BP. Crazy? sure, but that's the reality.
