(MS Gov.) Barbour: Deepwater drilling ban bad for U.S. economy
Source: Memphis Commercial Appeal

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, speaking Wednesday to The Delta Summit in Cleveland, Miss., criticized President Barack Obama's moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico, saying it will lead to higher oil and gas prices and harm the U.S. economy.

Barbour, a Republican, said more than 30,000 oil wells had been drilled in the Gulf of Mexico with no problems before the BP disaster in April. He also claimed BP did not follow normal procedures involved in shutting down a deep-sea oil well.

"If we close off deep-sea drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, that's where 30 percent of America's oil production comes from. That makes us more dependent on foreign oil."

2. I doubt Obama wants to end offshore drilling
He just wants it to have some safeguards against more sloppy drilling.

4. Hey Haley
Our over-reliance on both imported oil and deepwater oil are a pair of complementary disasters that are not "waiting to happen" - they have happened.

Our over reliance on imported petroleum from the hell holes of the ME have cost us over 5000 American lives and over One Trillion Dollars which we don't have and had to borrow from the Chinese. Not Good.

Our over reliance on "deep water" crude is pushing our technology beyond its limits. We don't have the technology to go after "deep water" crude. I am not saying we won't ever get --- just that we don't have it now. Heck, our ethanol technology, our nuclear technology, and our electric vehicle technology all surpass our "deep water" crude technology.
